Coming off a recent dominant victory at Wyantenuck Country Club, Randy Driscoll and Jeff Puleri combined for a 6-under par 65 in Friday’s first round of the 54-hole Little Brown Jug best-ball tournament, leaving the longtime friends tied for the lead with Adam Brickle and Longmeadow Country Club’s Sam Roy.
Like Driscoll and Puleri, the Country Club of Pittsfield’s Brickle is coming off a confidence-boosting victory, having won the CCoP’s 54-hole men’s club championship by an impressive 10 shots.
The leading duos are a single shot ahead of two Pioneer Valley teams, Edgewood Golf Club’s Mike and Kevin Slyne along with Springfield Country Club’s Jarrod Goss and K.C. Finley.
There are five other twosomes, including defending champions Bill Tefft and Brent Dietz, who are two shots back at 67, the young pairing of Berkshire Hills’ Nate Murphy and Pat McLaughlin and longtime partners Josh Shepard (CC of Pittsfield) and Jamie Cimini (Thorny Lea CC).
There are four other county teams in the Championship Flight — The CC of Pittsfield’s Jacob Driscoll and Kevin Quinto, who are tied for sixth place after a 4-under 67, Wahconah’s Shane Sottile and Brock Anelo (2-under 69), along with the CC of Pittsfield’s Matt and Shane Ortega (69).
The second round will be played today with the final 18 holes in the Championship Flight set for Sunday afternoon.
