On Wednesday afternoon, the Drive Fore Kids charity golf tournament revealed the names of 30 celebrities registered for this summer’s four-day event. The tournament can’t yet say a few of the other names planning to participate or the concert headliner, but former Major League Soccer MVP Taylor Twellman will say who the latter won’t be. “I’ll save the suspense, I’m not the musical act,” Twellman said. “So that won’t be announced next week, to save everybody else’s ears.” Drive Fore Kids returns to Falmouth Country Club on June 19-22. The third annual charity tournament benefits The Dempsey Center and MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, and has raised more than $500,000 toward pediatric care and cancer services in Maine since 2023. The tournament’s previous champions, professional bowler Ronnie Russell (2023) and professional tennis player Mardy Fish (2024), will be returning. Twellman, the 2024 runner-up, joked that he will serve uncooked lobster to some of the competition to improve his chances at the $265,000 prize purse. Brian Corcoran, executive director of Drive Fore Kids and CEO of Shamrock Sports and Entertainment, says this year’s tournament will be “bigger, better and (the) best” compared to the first two. “We’ve got such a solid base between our sponsors, volunteers and ticketed customers, from the first Drive Fore Kids, that we’ve been able to have an active dialogue with them on reasons to come back and bring a friend or two or 10,” Corcoran said. “… The charitable thing is a given, but I think we’re giving them more reasons (to come), with live music and the fan zone and related festival environment. And that’s kind of, like I said, you know, come for the golf and stay for the party. Whether you’re 8 or 80-plus and counting, we want to look at everybody and say, ‘Here’s what we’ve got in store for you.'” The event begins Thursday, June 19, with a practice round, followed by a celeb-am round the next day and the two-round celebrity challenge tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The Down on the Range concert series will be on Saturday night. New this year is Putt Putt Fore Kids, an official kickoff event at Thompson’s Point on May 17. Joining the field of Drive Fore Kids veterans are seven newcomers, headlined by former Boston Red Sox pitcher and World Series champion Jon Lester and former Boston Bruins center and all-star Tyler Seguin. Brian Baumgartner, best known as Kevin Malone from “The Office”; former LPGA pro and current Golf Digest senior producer Hally Leadbetter; Joey Graziadei of “The Bachelor” and “Dancing With the Stars”; former NHL all-star Joe Pavelski; and media personality Caleb Pressley round out the rookie list. Both Corcoran and Twellman are looking forward to showcasing Portland and southern Maine to the celebrity field. “Last year was really special,” Twellman said. “I brought my family, a lot of other people brought their family and their kids, they really enjoyed Portland, Maine, which for me, that’s more important than the golf tournament. Because sometimes you guys go unrecognized, and I don’t think people realize how unique this place is, the city, the state.” From the beer and food to the hospitality, Twellman has connected with the city since he joined the New England Revolution in 2002. The connections he’s made on the Falmouth Country Club course have also been highlights. “Those two patients I met last year is when I knew why we were doing this,” said Twellman, who was the 2005 Major League Soccer MVP with the Revolution. “It was pouring down rain, it was nasty, and that kid looked up to me, and he had a hat on, asked me to sign it, and we talked for about 10 minutes. I said, ‘Yeah, this thing’s got legs for more reasons than one,’ and I think that’s why we’re all here.” Twellman won’t be the only soccer ambassador breaking out the irons, as Portland Hearts of Pine co-owner Tom Caron, a NESN broadcaster and Lewiston native, will join the field. Twellman, a commentator for Apple TV’s MLS coverage, is excited about Maine’s USL League One team, which is currently preparing for a third-round U.S. Open Cup match, and its future prospects. He’s also a fan of the team’s away kits, which pay homage to the Valentine’s Day Bandit. “The Hearts of Pine are going to really do well here,” Twellman said. “They just are, because this market’s fit for it. It’s in the city. It’s in proper cities, proper Portland. I think it’s pretty cool that you’re asking me about Hearts of Pine, and again, I just don’t think 10 years ago I would believe that we’d be talking about (a professional soccer team in Maine).” The rest of the celebrity field announced on Wednesday includes Wells Adams, Rondé Barber, Jerome Bettis, Jay Bilas, Clay Buchholz, Rex Burkhead, Vince Carter, Dwight Freeney, Michael Goulian, Ben Higgins, Derek Lowe, Blair O’Neal, T.J. Oshie, Chad Pfeifer, Tuukka Rask, Andrew Raycroft, Matt Ryan, Sterling Sharpe and David Wells.
