A driver hit pedestrians at a parade celebrating the Liverpool Football Club's Premier League soccer title on Monday, May 26. Thousands were attending the trophy parade in Liverpool’s city center in England when the incident occurred just after 6 p.m. local time, ABC News reported. The Merseyside Police said they were contacted “following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street,” according to a police press release. “The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained.” Police later said the man — a 53-year-old, White British man from the Liverpool area — was arrested, per SkyNews. Emergency personnel were at the scene, according to police. Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? North West Ambulance Service said it was “supporting an incident” following reports of the traffic collision. “We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services,” the ambulance service said in a statement. “Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement on X: “The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected. I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident. I’m being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate.” Natasha Rinaldi told Sky News that she was watching the parade from a friend’s window when she “looked at the window and we saw the car run over people." "Then people started rushing to go after the driver and they tried to break the car. The police did everything to block and to push people away. "We could just hear screams and screams,” she added. “We were very confused. Some of my friends were down there and the car was so near them. It was a horrible scene, nobody was expecting it."
