Drivers told to be aware of 'confusing' road markings that can lead to £130 fine
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Road markings that leave many drivers confused could actually end up costing you in fines . When it comes to yellow box junctions, many drivers haven't got a clue what they mean or what they're supposed to do when they encounter them. It's an all too familiar sight on our roads - cars stranded in the middle of yellow boxes because the driver either wasn't paying attention or simply doesn't know the rules. These painted squares are there for a reason - to keep traffic flowing on our busiest roads. You'll usually spot them at bustling junctions, roundabouts and traffic lights. Their purpose is to ensure there's always a gap left when traffic is queuing, preventing other vehicles' paths from being blocked. This allows for the smooth flow of traffic and helps avoid total gridlock, reports Birmingham Live . If you stop inside a yellow box and block the way, you can cause absolute mayhem, leading to unnecessary delays and a symphony of honking horns from irate drivers. The only time you're allowed to stop inside these boxes is when you're waiting for the way to be clear when turning right. A common blunder sees drivers dive into the box before checking that the way ahead is clear. It's easy to find yourself stuck in the box without intending to break any rules, especially if there's a stationary vehicle in front of you. And then you're left to face the wrath of other drivers. Some councils are making use of fresh powers from the Department of Transport to penalise motorists over yellow box violations. A recent survey disclosed that 29% of drivers were baffled by yellow box regulations and couldn't clarify what they were. Motoring firm cinch explained: "Starting off with a common cause of confusion, yellow box junctions are designed to keep the flow of traffic moving at busy junctions. They're marked with criss-cross yellow lines forming a box in the middle of the junction. "The rule is simple: you can only enter the box when your exit is clear or if you're turning right and your turn is obstructed by oncoming traffic (or if you're queuing behind other vehicles waiting to turn right). The idea is to prevent gridlock caused by cars straddling the junction and stopping the flow of traffic. "If you're stationary in a yellow box (unless turning right), obstructing intersecting traffic, you could be hit with a fine of around £130. Sam Sheehan, motoring editor at cinch, said: "It can sometimes be hard to judge whether your exit is clear before entering, which is when most people are caught out at yellow box junctions. "Your best bet is to play it safe and only enter the box when you can see that there's space on the other side."
