Dublin NFL game gets increasingly glamorous following blockbuster news
@Source: irishmirror.ie
The first-ever NFL regular season game in Dublin has become significantly more interesting after the Pittsburgh Steelers signed four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback. The Steelers take on the Minnesota Vikings at Croke Park on September 28 in a historic day for sport in Ireland, and demand for tickets are set to be sky high. And interest will now take a particularly favourable turn following the signing of Rodgers, who is widely regarded as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. Departing the New York Jets after a disastrous 2024 season following his comeback from a major Achilles injury, 41-year-old Rodgers was contemplating retirement. However, talks with the Steelers have convinced him to sign on a one-year deal. It now makes a mouth-watering match up with veteran Rodgers set to face off against highly touted prospect JJ McCarthy in Croke Park this September. Details have slowly been released by NFL bosses about the game with Hill 16 set to be seated, while Croke Park Stadium rules are set to be relaxed for bringing alcohol to seats. €10m of public money has been ring-fenced for the event, with Dublin City Council and the Irish Government all hands on deck to ensure the event goes ahead smoothly. The economic impacts of the game coming to Dublin could range between €80m and north of €120m for the Irish economy. Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell says that he hopes to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Northampton Saints and Leinster Rugby in recruiting GAA Players and historians to meet the team and talk about the history of the Jones’ Road venue. “Part of the experience of this is [about the history].” He told the Irish Mirror. “It would be very easy to just say, ‘Hey, it's just another game,’ But then it would be shortsighted of me as the head coach to not really engage in learning about the great history. “I've already learned in a very short amount of time about many aspects of what makes Croke Park so, so special and an amazing venue, and I know our players will feel the same, and now we get the opportunity to play there. “We're gonna try to make the most of it and look forward to building a lot of relationships and hopefully acquiring some new Minnesota Vikings fans along the way.” Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email alerts.
