FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Renowned Dutch soccer coach Leo Beenhakker passed away Thursday at the age of 82, his family confirmed to Dutch broadcaster NOS.
Beenhakker’s illustrious career spanned decades, earning acclaim for managing top European clubs and national teams.
Born in Rotterdam, he began his managerial journey with SC Veendam in 1968 and later led Ajax Amsterdam to Eredivisie championships during two separate tenures. Beenhakker achieved international recognition at Real Madrid, guiding the team to three consecutive La Liga titles between 1986 and 1989, along with domestic cup triumphs.
He also led Feyenoord Rotterdam to an Eredivisie title and Johan Cruyff Shield victory in the late 1990s. On the international stage, he coached the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Poland, guiding the latter two nations to historic World Cup and European Championship appearances.
Beenhakker’s legacy remains as one of soccer’s most esteemed and versatile tacticians.
