‘I have informed family members’ - Nigerian eligible star claims he is ready to play for his fatherland

Osaze Urhoghide, the FC Dallas defender, has ended speculation about which country he will represent by declaring his intention to play for Nigeria. Since joining FC Dallas in February 2025 for a club-record fee for a defender, the 24-year-old Urhoghide has impressed in Major League Soccer. His strength and versatility allow him to play across the backline and as a defensive midfielder. Felix Oghenemaro Urhoghide, a Dutch-born professional football player with Nigerian heritage, relocated to England at the age of five. Despite being born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, his familial roots trace back to Nigeria. Urhoghide speaks about representing Nigeria Urhoghide is eligible to play international football for the Netherlands, England, and Nigeria, but has declared his commitment to Nigeria. “I am ready to play for my fatherland, Nigeria,” said Urhoghide accoriding to The Punch. I have informed family members of my readiness to play for the Super Eagles. I am also using this opportunity to let the Nigeria Football Federation know that I am ready.” Nigeria's defensive options are being questioned, and the move to include Urhoghide comes at an opportune time. As William Troost-Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo, and Leon Balogun reach the later stages of their careers, and Semi Ajayi faces frequent injuries, Urhoghide could revitalise a backline that needs new strength and consistency. Urhoghide has never played for the Netherlands or England at the youth level, making him eligible to play for Nigeria in next month's Unity Cup. The Super Eagles, led by Eric Chelle, will compete against Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago in the London-based mini-tournament in May.
