EDITORIAL : Dynamos’ survival must be earned on the pitch

THE 2025 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League resumes this weekend, and the most exciting phase of the campaign is also starting as there are just 10 matchdays left in a 34-week season. Apart from bottom placed Kwekwe United being odds-on favourites to be the first team to be relegated, the other positions are not so clear and might only be settled on the final day of the season on November 23. The title race is promising to be a nail-biting contest pitting defending champions, Simba Bhora, Scottland, MWOS, FC Platinum, Ngezi Platinum and TelOne. However, what has attracted more interest is the relegation zone and it is mainly because of the presence of popular Harare giants, Dynamos in the equation. Dynamos, who are under new coach Kelvin Kaindu, are second from bottom and, worryingly for their supporters, they are seven points from safety with time running out. Other giants like their bitter rivals, Caps United are not far away from the relegation waters and will need a couple of victories to ensure survival. But, for now, the focus is firmly on Dynamos given that relegation is a genuine danger that is lurking. For more than half a century, Dynamos Football Club has been the heartbeat of Zimbabwean football, dominating the local scene, capturing more league titles than any other team in the country’s history, thrilling fans with an expansive style of play, and producing generations of players who went on to star both locally and abroad. To speak of the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League without Dynamos is to leave out a central chapter of its story. Yet here we are, in a season that has seen the blue giants flirting dangerously with relegation. For a club of their stature, the prospect of dropping into the lower division is almost unthinkable. Dynamos are more than just another Premier League side — they are an institution, a brand, and, in many ways, the foundation upon which the modern local game has been built. It is precisely because of this influence that their current struggles are sending shockwaves through the football fraternity. Relegation would be a blow not just to Dynamos, but to the Premier League’s profile. While there are some football fans who are convinced Dynamos will stay in the Premier League regardless of where they finish the season placed, it is time they are reminded that sentiment cannot replace merit. Football is built on one unyielding principle: results. Teams stay up because they earn enough points over the course of the season, not because they have history, trophies, or loyal supporters. The moment we allow off-field considerations to decide who plays in the topflight, we compromise the very integrity of the sport. Should Dynamos go down, it would be painful to many of Zimbabwean football stakeholders, but it could also serve as a wake-up call to overhaul their management structures. If new coach Kaindu ensures Dynamos survive by their own efforts, it will not only preserve their proud legacy and remind Zimbabwean football that meritocracy still matters.
