Eight insane sporting comebacks to rival the Lionesses Euro 2025 semi-final triumph
@Source: dailystar.co.uk
THEY think it’s all over…it is now! The Lionesses keep defying the odds to make miracle comebacks, as the team head for the final of football’s Euro 2025 on Sunday. England’s women first overhauled a 2-0 deficit to eventually beat Sweden on penalties in the quarter finals, before going 1-0 down to Italy, only to pull off a last-minute win in the semis. Here JAMES MOORE looks at other thrilling sporting comebacks… Scouse that? At half time of the 2005 Champions League Final, in Istanbul, Turkey, Liverpool FC looked like they’d already lost with opponents AC Milan 3-0 up. But after the break, skipper Steven Gerrard scored, leading a dramatic six-minute goalfest which saw Liverpool draw level and finally win on penalties to lift the trophy. Man oh Man! It’s not the only time the Champions League final has served up drama. In 1999 Man Utd were aiming to win the ‘treble,’ but were 1-0 down against Bayern Munich in injury time. Then super-subs Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came on and both scored, pulling off an unlikely 2-1 victory in Barcelona . Beefy-beater : In the Third Test of cricket’s Ashes at Headingley, Leeds, in 1981, England were following on at odds of 500-1 to win. That’s when Ian ‘Beefy’ Botham stepped up, scoring a blistering 149 not out to give them a chance against the Aussies. Bowler Bob Willis then bowled them out cheaply to win the game. England won the series 3-1. Boxing clever : In the same year, boxer Sugar Ray Leonard looked out for the count against WBA title holder Thomas Hearns. Leonard was well behind on the scorecard and had a swollen eye. After the 12 th round his trainer told him: “You’re blowing it son!” Leonard summoned up his strength and knocked Hearns down to be declared the winner. Big bash : Cricketing all-rounder Ben Stokes produced a stunning reversal of fortune in the third Ashes test between England and Australia in 2019. England were chasing an unlikely 359 for victory in the fourth innings, but in a last wicket stand, Stokes scored 135 to guide England through the last 72 runs to win. Ballsy effort: Going into the last day of golf’s Ryder Cup in 2012, being played at the Medinah course in Chicago, the Americans looked sure fire winners. At one point they’d led Europe 10-4. But José María Olazábal’s side led a spirited fightback in the singles contest on the final day, which came down to Martin Kaymer rolling in a ten-foot putt to claim a 14.5-13.5 victory. Baize your game : In 1985 Northern Ireland’s Dennis Taylor bounced back from going 8-0 down to Steve Davis in the final of the World Snooker Championship, to win 18-17 by potting the final black. His efforts were echoed in 1992 when Scotland’s Stephen Hendry was 14-8 down against Jimmy White, only to win ten frames on the trot to beat the Englishman 18-14. Bowled over : At the 2017 Superbowl in the US, NFL’s New England Patriots, led by quarterback Tom Brady, overcame a score of 28-3, battling back against Atlanta Falcons to win the game34-28 in overtime.
