The body of a pregnant teenager has been found buried in the backyard of a home — with the unborn baby cut from her womb.
Emilly Azevedo Sena, who was nine months pregnant, was reported missing on March 12.
She was found dead the next day after the alarm was raised by concerned staff at a local hospital in Brazil after Nataly Helen Martins Pereira, 25, and her husband arrived with a newborn baby that she claimed was hers.
Hospital staff called police after becoming suspicious because Ms Pereira showed no signs of a recent birth or pregnancy.
The deputy of the civil police, Caio Albuquerque, said after an investigation, Emily’s body was found buried in a shallow grave with her abdomen cut open in the backyard of a house in the Jardim Florianópolis neighbourhood, in Cuiabá.
It is believed Emily was lured to the property after Ms Pereira told her she had spare baby clothes for donation.
Deputy Albuquerque said police believe the brutal crime was committed by multiple people, including members of the same family.
During a search, knives were found at the home which, police say, indicates the use of extreme violence.
“We have two main lines of investigation: child trafficking and kidnapping. It is not a crime committed in isolation, but with the participation of other people who, in some way, were involved in this cruel act,” the deputy said.
Ms Pereira has been charged with homicide, concealment of a corpse and registering someone else’s baby as her own.
She has reportedly told police that she had suffered a miscarriage six months before but had not told her husband or family and pretended she was still pregnant.
Her husband, and two other men arrested at the same time, were released after giving statements.
At Emilly’s wake, her mother, Ana Paula Meridiane, told local press that her daughter had no idea of the danger she was in and questioned why she had gone to the house for donated baby clothes when she had already had two baby showers and received many gifts.
“She believed in the wrong people, she was innocent because the woman deceived her with things she didn’t even need,” she told g1.
“I didn’t just lose a daughter, I lost a friend, partner and companion.
“Only those who lived with her know how wonderful her heart was. I always supported her relationship with her boyfriend, with advice, and they had their own house.
“Emilly didn’t need those clothes, she had everything. I never imagined my daughter was running so much risk”.
Ms Meridiane says the baby is now under the care of family and is being monitored by paediatricians.
