England players blown away by 'phenomenal' Wales star ahead of match

Ben Earl says his England team-mates have been hugely impressed by 'phenomenal' Wales captain Jac Morgan ahead of Saturday's Six Nations showdown in Cardiff. England head to the Principality Stadium still in the hunt for a first title since 2020, and lifting the trophy in the capital is a simply unthinkable prospect for Wales, who are meanwhile looking to avoid a wooden spoon. Despite his side's wretched run of 16 straight Test defeats, Morgan has attracted a number of plaudits for his performances in a red shirt, and has even been tipped in some quarters as a potential Lions captain. Team-mate Dafydd Jenkins was full of praise for the Ospreys star this week, declaring him the best seven in Britain, and England flanker Earl seems to have been similarly impressed. Earl told the BBC's Rugby Union Weekly podcast: "He's been phenomenal. Truly phenomenal. He's been the standard-bearer for their team in terms of almost every facet of the game for almost any time he's pulled on a Wales. "So I think he's been phenomenal for them and I'm really looking forward to going up against him this weekend." Earl says England are well aware of the possible permutations of this clash, but has suggested there are plenty of other reasons for England to want to claim victory on the day. "Firstly we want to go and win for a number of different reasons and I think the context of the Six Nations and what might happen is very low on the list. "We're talking about growing ourselves as a team. We're talking about finding an identity and I feel like we've grown that as the tournament's gone on. "So we want to do ourselves justice. We want to go and win. We want to go and win well. We want to go and perform. "We know how hard it's going to be. We know that Wales under the roof at the Principality is a completely different entity to almost anywhere else in the world." Indeed, while they haven't seen their side win a Six Nations fixture in two years, Wales fans are likely to create a red hot atmosphere as they look to do their bit in extinguishing the hopes of their most bitter of rivals. It's a challenge Earl says he's firmly looking forward to. "It's almost liberating in a way," he added when asked how England go about matching the emotion of the hosts. "Those are almost the games you remember more. "We love playing in front of our own fans. We love playing at home. But there's something about winning away, backs against the wall stuff, where you feel like the whole stadium's against you, and it's just 23 lads and the coaching staff trying to get a result and working hard for each other. "I think that's pretty special. In a way that liberates you more because you know that if you don't bring your best it's going to feel really, really hard."
