“Enraged Ex-Boyfriend Takes Woman’s Life Following Bitter Breakup”

A man from Illinois has confessed to fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend following a difficult breakup. The victim’s mother stated that he was “very jealous of her for not dedicating all her time to him” and was “making her life unbearable” before tragically shooting her in the neck, chest, shoulder, and hip.
Earlier this week, Emmet Metzger, aged 27, admitted to first-degree murder charges in the November 2023 killing of 24-year-old Alexis Maki at their shared apartment in New Baden, as reported by local CBS affiliate KMOV and the Belleville News-Democrat.
After the shooting, Metzger made a 911 call, during which he confessed over the phone upon realizing the gravity of his actions.
“I f—ed up,” Metzger told a dispatcher, according to KMOV and the News-Democrat. “I did something so bad. I shot my girlfriend. I need to be arrested, please.”
Metzger reportedly admitted to using a 9 mm Taurus G2C pistol to shoot Maki multiple times in their living room. The former couple had broken up a month before the shooting but still had a shared lease at an apartment on Hanover Street in New Baden, according to Maki’s mother, who spoke to KMOV in February 2024 about their relationship and prior incidents that allegedly happened between them.
“He was very jealous of her not spending all of her time with him,” said Maki’s mom, Lisa Brock. “He was just making her life miserable.”
On the day of the shooting, Brock said Metzger asked her to come over to the apartment they shared and to bring a dog that the two of them had adopted while dating so he could see it one last time. “I said, ‘I don’t feel good about this,’ and she said, ‘Neither do I,’” Brock told KMOV. “So, I said, ‘Don’t go.’”
Brock recalled how her daughter assured her that Metgzer had promised not to hurt her.
“I said, ‘You don’t know that,’” Brock remembered.

Later that night — and just hours before the shooting — police reportedly responded to an incident between Metgzer and one of Maki’s coworkers at a bar in Lebanon. Metzger allegedly attacked one of the workers, Giovanni Venuti, who also spoke to KMOV in February 2024 about the alleged incident.
“[Metzger] got out of his truck, walked up to the passenger side window of Alexis’ car where I was at and punched me four or five times,” Venuti said, noting how he was left with a chipped tooth and battered face.
Maki’s online obituary describes her as a “proud pet parent of her beloved dog, Echo, and her cats, Scout and Honey.” It says she “touched many lives with her generosity and selfless nature” and was “very involved in helping others throughout her life,” per the obit.
“People gravitated towards her charm,” the description says.
