Erin Cuthbert makes it an SFWA award double as Chelsea star named top Scot yet again

Scotland midfielder Erin Cuthbert has been voted Scottish Football Writers' Association Women's International Player of the Year for the second season running. The Chelsea midfielder emerged from a shortlist which also included Rachel Corsie, Sophie Howard and Martha Thomas. The 26-year-old said: "I'm honoured to receive the award. Thanks to everyone who voted for me, and my friends, family, staff members and, most importantly, my team-mates who push me on every single day. "I'm proud, but it comes as a result of being part of a team and being successful as part of a team. "It's never been anything that I've been aiming for in terms of individual accolades, but it's always nice and it's a reward for the hard work that I've done personally over the year." Meanwhile, Cuthbert says she is lapping up the rejuvenating impact of returning home after losing sleep in her pursuit of a quadruple with Chelsea. The Blues ace knows there is little chance of a rest in her busy schedule so she is using the change of scenery as a reset as she prepares for the UEFA Women's Nations League double header against Germany. Three wins over Manchester City in recent weeks saw Chelsea win the League Cup, remain on course to retain their Women's Super League title, and progress to the Champions League semi-finals. They are also in the last four of the FA Cup. Cuthbert said: "I love the business end of the season, it's brilliant. "We've got one trophy in the bank and three left to play for and I'm really excited. I just love the games that matter the most, the most pressurised moments. I feel like it brings out a different Erin and the best of me." Success comes at a cost though. "The last couple of weeks I've not really had a great amount of sleep. I've had loads of travel," the 26-year-old said from Scotland's Oriam training camp near Edinburgh. "The last three days I've slept 30 hours, just catching up on sleep because you just get in a cycle of work, work, work. You don't do anything outside of football. "As soon as you step off the pitch, you're thinking: 'How can I best prime myself for the next training session or the game that's coming ahead?' It's literally a 24-hour job, especially in these big moments and when you have a game every three days, recovery really matters. "It's honestly tough to find down time. I try and play golf, but obviously I had a rib injury so I've not been able to get on the golf course, but that's what I do like to do in my off time. I like to get outside. I'm trying to do more walks and get out a little bit, but not too much of course because we've got loads of games. "I think as an elite athlete in the business at the end of the season, you just accept you're not going to sleep, you're going to feel pressure. The pressure keeps you up at night. But it's what we love doing. "If I didn't have any pressure, then what's the point doing it for? I enjoy the pressure, I thrive upon it. I know it's a tough part of the season, but it's what every single person wants to be part of. "Everybody wants to be competing for four trophies, so I'm in a very privileged and lucky position and I've got to make the most of it." That rib injury forced Cuthbert out of the opening two Nations League defeats under interim head coach Mick McArdle. "I just love the refresh here at Scotland and hearing the Scottish accent, just being back with the girls in general," she said. "It's nice to break it up because amongst all the pressure at Chelsea, just come here in a bit more of a relaxed environment. "It's just nice, the fresh scenery. Being back up in Scotland, the air's just different. The weather's looking lovely. I'm happy as Larry being home. "I love being back in amongst the squad. I was gutted to miss out last camp. I love playing for my country every time I come here. "I'm excited for the games ahead. It's a new campaign, feels like a sort of fresh squad, fresh kit as well, fresh everything, so I'm looking forward to see what we can achieve."
