Eubank Jr vs Benn undercard and running order: Who is fighting and what time does it start?
@Source: standard.co.uk
Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn is not the only keenly-anticipated fight taking place at the Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday night. Though the ultimate grudge match between two long-rime arch-rivals who harbour a genuine intense dislike for one another is undoubtedly the headline act of a huge evening of boxing in north London, the undercard features from 5pm BST several other bouts worthy of plenty of attention in their own right. Another all-British showdown serves as the chief support act of the night as familiar light-heavyweight opponents Anthony Yarde and Lyndon Arthur go head to head for the third time in four-and-a-half years. Arthur stunned heavy favourite Yarde - not long off his brave world title challenge against Sergey Kovalev in Russia - via split decision in their first meeting at the Church House in Westminster back in December 2020, picking up the Commonwealth and vacant WBO Inter-Continental titles in the stacked 175-pound division in the process. However, Yarde inflicted swift revenge with a fourth-round knockout in the rematch held 12 months later at the Copper Box Arena. Now they are set to complete a London trilogy, with Yarde on a rather low-key three-fight winning streak since his entertaining loss to Artur Beterbiev in January 2023 as he plots another title bid and Arthur looking for a second straight victory having outpointed Liam Cameron since losing his IBO title to now undisputed champion Dmitry Bivol in Riyadh in December 2023. That bout comes after the return of veteran Liverpool middleweight Liam ‘Beefy’ Smith, who has not fought since his stunning fourth-round stoppage of Eubank Jr in January 2023 was avenged eight months later as he was dominated before being stopped in the 10th. The former WBO super-welterweight champion makes his comeback against Aaron McKenna, the unbeaten 19-0 talent from Ireland who is looking to take the next step in his career with a big-name scalp having last fought with a 10th-round stoppage of Jeovanny Estela last summer. The WBA International middleweight belt is on the line, with Smith - forced out of a meeting with Josh Kelly at Wembley last September due to illness - hoping to utilise his vast experience having not given up hope of his own trilogy fight against Eubank Jr. The British cruiserweight title is being defended by Cheavon Clarke, who was upset by France’s Leonardo Mosquea in Monaco in December, suffering his first professional loss on the judges’ scorecards as he missed out on the vacant European belt. Now 10-1, Clarke will hope to get back to winning ways as he defends the gold won against Ellis Zorro last May, taking on the undefeated English champion Viddal Riley, a rapper and YouTuber and former trainer of KSI who has built a successful boxing career and improved to 12-0 with an early stoppage of Dan Garber in Liverpool before Christmas before his scheduled clash with Isaac Chamberlain was cancelled. Riley fought at heavyweight for the first time in that contest after Steve Eloundou-Ntere withdrew from their scheduled cruiserweight match-up. The main card action on Saturday night also opens in the cruiserweight division, with Bournemouth’s Chris Billam-Smith beginning on the comeback trail following his brave loss to WBA champion Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez in Riyadh in November in which he relinquished the WBO world title he had held since beating Lawrence Okolie and successfully defended against both Mateusz Masternak and Richard Riakporhe. He’s up against Brandon Glanton, the 20-2 American who has attracted strong criticism this week for vowing to give his opponent “brain damage” in the ring after accusing Billam-Smith of rejecting his offer of a handshake after he beat Okolie at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth in May 2023.
