Every wild Wrexham transfer rumour – Zlatan Ibrahimovic out of retirement to Sergio Ramos move
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Wrexham have been on a crazy journey since the club was bought by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2021. From achieving back-to-back promotions to receiving visits from A-listers like Will Ferrell and Hugh Jackman, supporters of the Red Dragons have had to pinch themselves at times in the last few years. The Welsh side have also signed some high-profile players, including former Premier League stars such as Steven Fletcher, James McClean and Jay Rodriguez. Wrexham's newfound riches, fuelled by the success of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary, have also seen them linked with some more outlandish targets who are probably out of reach for the League One side. While most are just paper talk, there is at least one ambitious pursuit, which was triggered by the owners themselves but did not come to fruition. Here, Mirror Football rounds up the wildest Wrexham transfer rumours. Starting with the most recent, former Real Madrid and Liverpool forward Fernando Morientes has said that Sergio Ramos should move to Wrexham. The 39-year-old is currently plying his trade in Mexico with Monterrey in the Liga MX. But would the ex-Los Blancos captain fancy a switch to North Wales? Morientes certainly seems to think so. Speaking to bet365, he said: "Could we see Sergio Ramos at Wrexham? Well, once you leave Real Madrid and that top media spotlight, you have a lot of choice. "He chose, for example, to go to Sevilla because he's from Seville and he really wanted to go back. Then he left Seville and now he has decided to go to Mexico. I imagine it was a friendship with some of the directors. "He wanted to live a different experience, and if the experience gives him the chance to be happy on a personal level, more than a sporting one. Go for it. If that's the case with Wrexham too, it'll probably be a good thing." Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been retired now since June 2023 but former Premier League striker Matt Jansen reckons Wrexham could convince him to reconsider. The Swedish forward amassed over 570 goals for club and country during impressive career-spanning spells with giants such as Barcelona, Manchester United and Inter Milan. The four-time Champions League winner has since settled into the role of senior adviser at AC Milan. However, Jansen thinks Wrexham's financial power would tempt Ibrahimovic. "It would probably suit Zlatan Ibrahimovic, although he retired," Jansen told FruityKing. "But money talks and they've certainly got it. It would be Hollywood and he'd enjoy it, wouldn't he? "But it would certainly be that type, or a big target man like Chris Wood maybe, although he's not going to leave Nottingham Forest. It would all depend on whether they could get the signings that they would need to challenge and whether those players would suit." Wrexham have also been linked with Leicester City City striker Jamie Vardy on several occasions in the last few years. The 38-year-old is nearing the end of his career but reportedly has no plans of hanging up his boots just yet. With his contract with the Foxes due to expire this summer, there is renewed speculation over whether Vardy might be lured by the Hollywood limelight. Wrexham director Humphrey Ker previously addressed the rumours in an interview with SPORTSbible last year. He said: "There's nothing to say that Jamie Vardy wouldn't be a great Wrexham player. It's not a name I've had mentioned inside the building before but, you know, age and profile wouldn't put us off." Is no one safe from the crazy Wrexham transfer rumour mill? Last November, none other than Cristiano Ronaldo was connected with a shock move to the club. The Portuguese megastar currently plays for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr and has scored 96 goals for the club. While the former Real Madrid player is widely expected to extend his stay, ex-United coach Rene Meulensteen believes he could be convinced to play at the Racecourse Ground. Meulensteen told TribalFootball.com: "Cristiano Ronaldo to Wrexham? Anything can happen in football. The main things he would consider are could he be successful in that environment and could he be a success there. It's an intriguing idea and with his new profile on social media it might help that stretch into Hollywood with the Ryan Reynolds connection." Finally, here's a bonkers transfer target that Wrexham's co-owners actively tried to pursue in Ronaldo's old Real Madrid team-mate, Gareth Bale. Despite the Welsh icon retiring from football in January 2023, McElhenney has previously tried to get him to change his mind. Posting on X in April of the same year, the Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator said: "Hey @GarethBale11 let's play golf, where I totally won't spend 4 hours trying to convince you to un-retire for one last magical season." McElhenney later stepped up his efforts as he said: " Gareth Bale is still technically available! I don't know, I made the plea last year and I'm just going to tell Gareth that the offer's still on the table." Unfortunately for Wrexham, Bale has poured cold water on the idea. When asked about the possibility of joining Phil Parkinson's side, he said: "No, I don't think so. I think I was looking more for a free round of golf off Rob. I'm sure we'll have a chat and a joke, but I'm quite happy where I am." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
