Ex-Stirling Scotland star inspired for World Cup win by dad's special track

Former Stirling County youngster Eva Donaldson had her dad’s special tunes ringing in her ears as she helped Scotland strike the perfect note in their Women’s World Cup opener on Saturday. The forward is included as one of six former Stirling players in the national squad for the tournament in England, with their opening match against Wales set to be a decisive one in potentially sealing progress through the knockout rounds. But ahead of the big kick-off in Salford at the weekend, Eva was to receive a special surprise in the shape of a musical project which had been the brainchild of dad Ray and his brother Ian in the months leading up to the event. Drawing inspiration from her start on the Bridgehaugh pitches to Eva stepping out on the global stage, they helped create a new track for the team to act as inspiration. The song, named ‘Yon Golden Dawn’, is recorded by former BBC Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year, Claire Hastings alongside the all-female ensemble Ban-Laoch. It’s a heartfelt tribute to Eva and her teammates and recognises their sacrifices to get to the pitch - with Ray getting help from the ex-Stirling group in the squad to pull it together. Speaking to the Scottish Rugby website, Eva said: “I found out on text during camp time, he woke me up with a million texts at like seven in the morning! “I absolutely love it. I can tell how much work he has put into it. “They spent so much time going through the Scottish Rugby website, the girls gave him ideas, he went through our socials to see what words we use or phrases that mean a lot, and you can tell because that comes through the lyrics. “Dad obviously then researched singers and found Claire, and she was keen to get involved so the whole thing flew from there.” The tune touches on the early commitment made by Eva’s parents to her career as a youngster - a contribution which Eva hopes will offer inspiration to other getting into the sport. She added: “Originally I just started rugby for fun, but it quickly became more serious, I would be at the gym three times a week before school. “My mum and dad would drop everything to help me do that, they would get up at like 5.30 in the morning to take me there, pick me up and take me to school in Callander, so that’s like 45/50 minutes. “I forget sometimes how much they sacrificed to give that to me. “I think my dad loves to go above and beyond, it will never just be a card with a good luck message, he will always think of something out of the box and that is exactly what he has done. “It’s not been about him, it’s been about what ‘will the girls want and what will Scotland want’. “I really hope that people who are fans of Scottish music, who maybe haven’t watched women’s rugby before, that this song is a bit of a gateway to us and it inspires people to get behind the team at the World Cup. “ This could be a great way to bring new fans and connect us all.” The song was played to the squad ahead of the match against the Welsh, where they produced a stirring display to run out comfortable 38-8 winners - with wing Francesca McGhie starring with four tries on the afternoon. Eva made an appearance from the bench initially as a blood replacement in the first half, before coming on for good in the final 10 minutes to replace Emma Wassell. Front-rower Ellian Clarke made the starting XV from the ex-County group, while number eight Evie Gallagher played the whole game at number eight a week after celebrating her birthday and had the perfect present by notching the game’s penultimate score.
