Alfred Nelson, the former head coach of Hohoe United, has disclosed the reasons behind his departure from the club after successfully guiding them to their first-ever appearance in the Ghana Premier League.
Nelson's exit comes as the newly promoted side appointed Rahim Bashiru as their new head coach in early July 2025, ahead of the upcoming season.
In an interview with AhotorSports, Nelson explained that his departure was anticipated due to licensing requirements that prevent him from serving as head coach in the Ghana Premier League.
He stated, “You know, in terms of coaching we have requirements and from the onset I knew when the team qualifies I would not be the head coach. I knew.”
He further elaborated, “Licensing won’t permit me to be head coach for any Premier team so I was aware that will happen.”
Nelson also confirmed his official exit from Hohoe United, emphasizing his need to focus on personal development to meet the necessary qualifications for a head coaching role in the future.
“Let me make it official that I am no longer with Hohoe United because I have to focus on myself, try and acquire the needed license to make a head coach,” he said.
Despite his departure, Nelson expressed a deep connection to the club, noting, “Hohoe is like a home and I believe if I get all the requirements I might go there again but I have to better myself.”
Hohoe United, previously known as Liberty Professionals, earned promotion to the Ghana Premier League by clinching the Zone Three title in the Access Bank Division One League during the 2024-25 season.
The club amassed an impressive 72 points in 30 matches, winning 23 games, drawing 3, and losing 4. They finished five points ahead of second-placed Port City, who accumulated 67 points.
Hohoe United outperformed several other teams in their zone, including Okwahu United, Great Olympics, Rainmasters, Na God, Home Stars, Golden Kick, and Attram De Visser.
The club’s rebranding from Liberty Professionals to Hohoe United was officially approved by the Ghana Football Association in June 2023, following their relegation from the Ghana Premier League in the 2020-21 season.
This promotion marks a significant milestone for the Hohoe-based club as they prepare for their debut in the top tier of Ghanaian football under new leadership.
