Family killed in Hudson River helicopter crash were celebrating the birthday of one of their children: report

The family of five aboard the doomed tourist helicopter that plummeted into the Hudson River Thursday was tragically in New York City to celebrate the birthday of one of their three young children.
Agustin Escobar, his wife, Merce Camprubi Montal, and their three kids — ages 4, 5 and 11 — were killed along with an unidentified pilot when the chopper went down into the murky waters of the Hudson.
The family had just arrived in the Big Apple from Barcelona, Spain, to mark the birthday of one of their children, Spanish newspaper El Diario reported.
After touching down in the city, the family decided to spend their first day touring Manhattan by taking a scenic trip overlooking the Statue of Liberty.
Before their doomed expedition, Escobar, Montal and their kids were seen smiling in front of the Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV helicopter in gut-wrenching photos on the New York Helicopter Tours website.
Not long after the group ascended, the unidentified pilot, 36, radioed base to warn that they were running out of fuel.
Moments later, tragedy struck as the chopper split in half as it flew over the Hudson between New York and New Jersey at around 3:15 p.m. — just 16 minutes after take-off, FDNY officials said.
The pilot was also killed in the crash.
Escobar has since been identified as the Global CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility, while his wife was a global commercialization manager at Siemens Energy, according to her LinkedIn profile. She was the granddaughter of Agustí Montal Costa, the former president of FC Barcelona soccer club.
Harrowing video footage showed the fuselage plummeting upside down, resulting in a large splash near Pier 40 on West Houston Street and West Street.
Witnesses described hearing a “boom sound” at the moment of impact after the helicopter’s propellers spun separately out of control into the river.
Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and two more were declared dead at the hospital, officials said.
The mangled wreck of the sightseeing helicopter was lifted out of the cold waters of the Hudson late Thursday night as dive operations continues into Friday.
The owner of the tourist helicopter on Thursday told The Post he’s “devastated” by the tragedy.
“It’s devastation,” New York Helicopter Tours CEO Michael Roth exclusively told us. “I’m a father and a grandfather and to have children on there, I’m devastated. I’m absolutely devastated.
“The only thing I know by watching a video of the helicopter falling down, that the main rotor blades weren’t on the helicopter,” he went on.
“And I haven’t seen anything like that in my 30 years being in business, in the helicopter business. The only thing I could guess — I got no clue — is that it either had a bird strike or the main rotor blades failed. I have no clue. I don’t know.
“This is horrific,” Roth added. “But you gotta remember something, these are machines and they break.”
President Trump has since spoken out, calling the incident “terrible.”
“Terrible crash,” he wrote on Truth Social. “The video of the accident is horrific. God bless the families and friends of the victims,” he added, in part.
