Fenway Park’s best chance to host MLB All-Star Game is reportedly in 2029

It’s been longer than two decades since one of the All-Star Games of the four major sports has been hosted in New England, but that might change before the 2030s arrive.
There’s a belief within the MLB industry that Fenway Park’s best chance to host the All-Star Game in the coming years is in 2029, MassLive’s Sean McAdam reported Sunday. That would mark the 30th anniversary of the last time Fenway Park hosted the Midsummer Classic, which is part of the reason why that’s viewed as the Red Sox’ best opportunity to have the All-Star Game in their home ballpark, McAdam added.
Fenway has been rumored to be a possible host venue for the MLB All-Star Game again in recent years, but it’s unclear what years the Red Sox might have made a bid to host the game. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed the Red Sox’ interest in hosting the All-Star Game in an interview with The Boston Globe‘s Pete Abraham in July.
“Time is one issue,” Manfred told Abraham on how the elague determines All-Star Game hosts. “Level of interest of the club is another issue.
“The Red Sox have certainly expressed interest,” Manfred added.
The 2026 All-Star Game will be held at the Phillies’ home ballpark, Citizens Bank Park. Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, was recently named the host of the 2027 MLB All-Star Game.
It isn’t known where the 2028 MLB All-Star Game will be played yet, but a few possible locations have emerged. The Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles are the frontrunners to host the event in 2028, USA Today‘s Bob Nightengale reported in July.
However, if MLB players are allowed to participate in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Giants are expected to play host to the Midsummer Classic, the San Francisco Chronicle‘s Susan Slusser recently reported. MLB would reportedly want to allow those playing in the All-Star Game and the Olympics to take a short flight to Los Angeles, with the Midsummer Classic scheduled to take place three days before the Opening Ceremony.
The 1999 MLB All-Star Game was the last time an All-Star Game from one of the four major sports leagues was held in New England. The Celtics, who haven’t hosted the NBA All-Star Game since 1964, have shown interest in hosting the NBA All-Star Game in recent years. The Bruins last hosted the NHL All-Star Game in 1996. The Patriots, meanwhile, will almost certainly never host the Pro Bowl as that game has traditionally been played in warmer climates or in the host city of the Super Bowl that year.
The 1999 MLB All-Star Game was one of the more memorable Midsummer Classics. Red Sox icon Ted Williams received a major ovation and was greeted by every All-Star player before throwing out the first pitch. Then-Red Sox star Pedro Martinez followed that with a performance for the ages, striking out five of the six hitters he faced en route to winning All-Star Game MVP.
