The Fijian Elections Office is focused on preparations for the 2026 general election and the local government elections later this year.
Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa said this as the Fiji Elections Office today commenced the legal destruction of the 2022 general election ballot papers, officially concluding the election results phase.
As part of this process, 2066 ballot boxes will be destroyed over the next five weeks. Mataiciwa says a small, dedicated team works carefully to ensure the process is done correctly and legally. “We want to take our time and ensure everything is done accurately without rushing the process,” she added.
“This gives us the chance to close the 2022 election chapter and focus on improving and strengthening our processes for future elections,” Mataiciwa continued.
The Supervisor of Elections says that to ensure transparency and security, a police officer and a quality assurance representative from the Elections Office is monitoring each destruction station.
The Elections Office has also invited registered political parties to observe the process.
Election preparation
While the destruction of the 2022 ballot papers is ongoing, the Elections Office is also assessing polling venues for the upcoming general elections in 2026 and this year’s Local Government elections.
Mataiciwa confirmed that teams are visiting polling locations to check their suitability and accessibility.
The Elections Office is also working on updating voter lists, with teams circulating provisional lists for community leaders to verify. This will allow Fijians to check and update their voter details if needed.
