Finnish comedy band KAJ has won Sweden’s Melodifestivalen and will represent the Nordic country at Eurovision 2025.
Their winning song is called Bara bada bastu, which translates to “Let’s Just Sauna.” This victory is historic, as it marks the first time this century that Sweden will send a Swedish-language song to Eurovision. The last time Sweden competed in its native language was in 1998.
KAJ won thanks to the public vote
KAJ is a trio from Vörå, Finland, and is composed of Jakob Norrgård, Axel Åhman, and Kevin Holmström. The group is known for blending humor with music, and their sauna-themed entry quickly gained popularity among fans. KAJ’s performance and out-of-the-box style resonated with the Swedish public, despite the band not being listed among favourites.
The contest was tied, with pre-contest favorite Måns Zelmerlöw, Sweden’s 2015 Eurovision winner, finishing in second place. While the international jury awarded Zelmerlöw more points (76 to KAJ’s 74), the public vote shifted the winner. KAJ received 90 points from viewers, while Zelmerlöw got 81, securing KAJ’s victory.
“We’re taking the sauna to Switzerland!”
Following their win, the band expressed their excitement, calling the moment “surreal.” Norrgård described feeling as if he were watching himself from outside his own body. The group celebrated at the Melodifestivalen afterparty and promised to bring the same energy to Eurovision. “We’re taking the sauna to Switzerland—then we’ll see what happens,” Norrgård said.
KAJ’s unexpected triumph has surprised both Sweden and Finland. Their song has topped Sweden’s Spotify charts, and Finnish officials have also taken notice. Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen congratulated the band, highlighting the cultural ties between Finland and Sweden. Other Finnish ministers, including those responsible for finance, education, and culture, also shared their support.
KAJ will represent Sweden at the Eurovision final in Basel, Switzerland, on May 17.
