A wildfire has broken out in El Chaparral, Mijas, near the nudist beach by the A-7 road, making it the sixth wildfire in Malaga province over the past two days. Firefighters worked through the night to contain a blaze, which was reported in the Mijas Golf urbanisation area. The Infoca firefighting service declared the fire stabilised at 1.30am and fully controlled by 7.25am on Sunday, July 13. A team of forest firefighters, an environmental agent, and a fire engine remain on-site for final containment efforts. In Benalmadena a fire broke out on Saturday, July 12, on Maestro Trujillo Avenue, north of Tivoli. The ex-workers who remain on call to watch over the park notified the emergency services. This was the second fire in 2 weeks at the site. The weekend has been challenging for Malaga’s firefighting teams, with strong winds reaching 50-60 km/h fuelling wildfires across the province. The first fire erupted on Friday at 7.40pm in El Paraíso, Villanueva de la Concepción, requiring ten aerial units and ground crews. Despite fierce winds, it was extinguished by 9pm on Saturday. Another fire in Álora’s El Aljibe area, reported at 10.15pm Friday, was tackled by three firefighting groups and extinguished shortly after. In Casares, a fire at the Costa del Sol Environmental Complex was reported by Mayor Juan Luis Villalón on social media. Lastly, a blaze in Moclinejo’s Los Bellacos area, declared at 12.15pm Saturday, was stabilised within 45 minutes with the aid of two Super Puma helicopters, a light aircraft, and multiple ground units. The series of fires reveals the heightened wildfire risk in Malaga amid strong winds and dry conditions, with firefighting teams working tirelessly to protect the region. The real problems come, though, when resources are spread thin, as was the case in Mijas, 2022.
