Maiduguri, Borno State – Several communities in Maiduguri were overwhelmed by floodwaters on Wednesday following a torrential downpour that lasted more than three hours, leaving many residents homeless and disrupting daily life. Areas worst affected include Moro-Moro, Damboa Road, Customs, Bulumkutu, Dubai (near Maimalari Barracks), and Pompomari By-pass. Streets were submerged, homes flooded, and commercial activities brought to a halt, as residents scrambled to salvage what remained of their belongings. “This came as a shock,” said Ibrahim Goni, a resident of Moro-Moro. “Our drainage systems are blocked, so water from the roads just poured straight into our homes. Many people have lost everything.” In Bulumkutu, residents used planks and tyres to cross flooded roads. Aisha Hassan, a trader in the area, said her shop was submerged, with most of her goods destroyed. “It rained non-stop for over three hours. Before we could move anything, the water entered our houses. Women are crying over their foodstuffs, clothes, and other items that were washed away,” she said. At Pompomari By-pass, a major route linking several neighborhoods, commercial vehicles and tricycles were forced to abandon the road due to high water levels. Pedestrians waded through knee-deep water while some residents set up barricades to divert the flood away from their homes. The Zonal Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sirajo Aliyu, said his agency is working with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (BOSEMA), the military, police, NSCDC, and other relevant bodies to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts. “We have received reports from several flashpoints across Maiduguri, and our response teams have already been mobilised. Initial assessments have been carried out in areas like Moro-Moro and Customs,” Mr Aliyu said.
