Florida Republican to Lead Task Force Focused on JFK Files, Epstein List
@Source: newsweek.com
Representative Anna Paulina Luna announced on Tuesday that she will lead a task force focused on declassifying federal secrets including documents on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy Jr. and files related to convicted sex offender Jeffery Epstein."This will no longer be a task force that makes bold promises only to fade into irrelevance or send strongly worded letters," Luna, a Florida Republican, said. "This will be a relentless pursuit of truth and transparency, and we will not stop until the American people have the answers they deserve."Why It MattersPresident Donald Trump promised the release of the remaining classified documents related to Kennedy's death. On his third day back in office, Trump signed an order to declassify government records relating to the assassinations of Kennedy, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and Senator Robert F. Kennedy.During his first presidential term, Trump authorized the release of tens of thousands of documents related to JFK's assassination but left some classified after the CIA and FBI raised concerns they could pose national security risks.In August 2019, Epstein, a convicted sex offender, died in jail while awaiting new sex trafficking charges. Though his death was ruled a suicide, conspiracy theories persist because of his well-documented connections to many public figures. During the 2024 presidential campaign, Trump suggested he would be open to releasing Epstein's client list if he returned to the White House. He now faces calls to do so.What To Know"It has been a profound honor that I have been trusted by Speaker Mike Johnson and Chairman James Comer to lead the House Oversight Task Force on declassification on federal secrets," Luna said. "This task force will be a beacon of bipartisanship."Luna announced that with "the White House, our intelligence allies, the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice" she and her task force will be looking into the assassinations the Kennedys and King; "unidentified aerial phenomena, also known as UAPS; unidentified submerged objects, also known as USOs; the Epstein client list; the origins of Covid-19; and the 9/11 files."The task force will consists of Republican Representatives Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Eric Burlison of Missouri, Eli Crane of Arizona, Brandon Gill of Texas and Nancy Mace of South Carolina."Although I'd like to note that I'm expanding this to the entire governing body and will allow certain members to waive on," Luna said.Luna noted that her group has "already initiated close to a dozen communications with various agencies to include [Attorney General] Pam Bondi at the Department of Justice and the Secretary of State," Marco Rubio."We will cut through the bureaucracy, challenge the stonewalling and ensure that the American people finally get the truth that they have been denied for too long," Luna said. "If we are to endure and thrive as a nation, we must restore trust, trust through transparency."Release of JFK Assassination RecordsKennedy died on November 22, 1963, when Lee Harvey Oswald, a former U.S. Marine and defector to the Soviet Union, fired three shots from a sixth-floor window of the Texas School Book Depository, striking the president as his motorcade passed through Dealey Plaza in Dallas.His assassination has continued to captivate the public and fuel widespread conspiracy theories. A poll released in 2022 showed approximately half the country believed there was a larger conspiracy involved in the president's murder, rather than the official narrative of a lone gunman.Following the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act passed by Congress in 1992, thousands of documents have become publicly accessible. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration said that more than 97 percent of the millions of documents it has collected about the assassination have now been released to the public.The Warren Commission's 1964 report concluded that Oswald acted alone, but skepticism has persisted. Some have questioned whether the Central Intelligence Agency or other organizations had any connection with Oswald or involvement in the killing.At a rally in Washington, D.C., on January 19, the day before his second inauguration, President Trump spoke to a crowd about releasing the remaining assassination records."In the coming days, we are going to make public remaining records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert Kennedy, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.," Trump said.On his third day in office, Trump signed an executive order to release the documents."With a stroke of a pen, he committed to declassifying the files concerning the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a decision not just monumental but pivotal," Luna said.Release of Jeffery Epstein FilesTrump has faced calls to release a client list that could show who was directly involved in Epstein's alleged sex trafficking network.In January 2024, a New York judge released a 900-page document that mentioned the names of people, including Trump, who had associations with Epstein.The document is not Epstein's alleged client list. Many of those named in the document were not accused of any wrongdoing and did not necessarily have any criminal connection to the sex offender.Conservative political commentator Glenn Beck said Tuesday on the PBD Podcast that the Epstein files will be released within the next 10 days.Podcast host Patrick Bet-David asked Beck what "kind of information" he has to "be that certain about it.""I plead the fifth," Beck said. "Next 10 days, I'm telling you. Day No. 1, Kash Patel walks in. By the end of the day, it'll be released."Patel, Trump's nominee for FBI director, was questioned about the release of the evidence against Epstein and his potential accomplices. Republican Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn, who has been a proponent for the release of the evidence, asked Patel if he would "work with me on this issue, so we know who worked with Jeffrey Epstein in building these sex trafficking rings.""Absolutely, senator," Patel said.What People Are SayingFlorida Representative Anna Paulina Luna, at her press conference: "The American people must be trusted to think for themselves, to form their own judgements from the truth they are entitled to know. We've been treated like children for too long and kept in the dark by those we elected to serve us."President Donald Trump, while signing the executive order to release JFK's files: "That's a big one, huh? A lot of people are waiting for this for a long—for years, for decades."The Young Turks co-host Cenk Uygur, on X, formerly Twitter: "Trump ordering the release of government files on JFK, RFK and MLK assassinations is a great thing. I don't know how much of the real evidence is in there, but I'll take it. And I'd like to remind my friends on the left, releasing the files was originally a left-wing position."Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn, during a Senate confirmation hearing for Kash Patel: "I have been working on this for years, trying to get those records of who flew on Epstein's plane and who helped him build this international human trafficking, sex trafficking ring."Kash Patel, during his Senate confirmation hearing: "Child sex trafficking has no place in the United States of America, and I will do everything, if confirmed as FBI director, to make sure the American public knows the full weight of what happened in the past and how we are going to countermand missing children and exploited children going forward."Elon Musk, in an October 2024 interview with Tucker Carlson: "If Trump wins, that Epstein client list is gonna become public. Some of those billionaires behind Kamala are terrified of that outcome."What Happens NextThe task force's first hearing is set for March, according to Luna."The date will be announced soon," she said.
