Gout and Kennedy have burst onto the scene in the last 12 months, with Browning largely forgotten due to their incredible feats stealing the headlines. But the 27-year-old has his sights set on reminding the athletics world what he is capable of when he attempts to produce a mini boilover by upsetting Kennedy on Saturday night in the 100m final at the Australian championships. Browning has a personal best time of 10.01 from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where he became a household name after upstaging Jamaican sprint phenom Yohan Blake in his heat. Browning clocked a sizzling 9.96 that year, but an illegal tailwind meant it wasn’t legal. Since then he has suffered several injury setbacks, which has meant he has flown well and truly under the radar. But he believes he’s ready to once again show he is the best sprinter in the country after clocking a strong 10.07 on Friday in the heat. “I hope I can delay the changing the guard a little bit longer, but those guys (Gout and Kennedy) are right there,” Browning said at the Australian championships. “I think I’m changing as an athlete. I think the past few years I have been severely impacted by injury. I feel like I’m confident I’m on top of that. “The depth coming through is really strong. It’s even inspiring to me as someone who’s older than these guys. It bodes really well for the relay. I think it’s good for the health of the sport.” Kennedy – who eased up near the end of his incredible 10.00 effort on Friday to save himself for the final – is heavily favoured to take out the final, an event Gout won’t be competing in. However, the 21-year-old will be looking to upstage the 17-year-old when they go head-to-head in the 200m on Sunday. Kennedy beat Gout in the 200m at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne last month and the pair have a friendly rivalry. “Me and Gout are close. I was buzzing for him. It was insane, so good,” Kennedy said about Gout’s 9.99-second sprints on Friday, which unfortunately didn’t count due to an illegal tailwind. “I was upset he beat me to it, but I’m going to try to do it legal. I think the race for a legal 19 (in the 200m) and the race for a legal nine (in the 100m) – it’s so on! “Sunday’s going to be incredible. If the body’s up for it, I’m definitely going to be gunning for that too. There’ll be a bit of chirping for sure if I get it.”
