French by name, but a quiz on the USA
@Source: expressandstar.com
Following ladies of Cannock and District Ladies Probus Club enjoying lunch, Andy distributed the picture quiz. The choice of twice baked souffle with salad or chicken ballotine with sautéed tomatoes and basil, wrapped in streaky bacon or scampi with chunky chips, followed by vanilla baked cheesecake and either fresh fruit or ice cream – should have nourished our brains. Instead of relaxing, the members needed inspiration, for the five quiz rounds to follow! Round one of pictures showed a selection of familiar landmarks in USA, very well-known but the challenge was to remember their names. Andy tried to encourage participants, informing them the prizes included a ‘round the world cruise’ but afraid anyone would be clever enough to win the quiz, he quickly added “he was joking.” Round two was more a guessing game – no multiple choice that youngsters have on exams these days but he was trying to make it easier than the first round. This food and drink round was thought provoking, including many everyday things to ponder such as; what was a Jaffa Cake – a cake or biscuit or which way is the Devon or Cornish way - to jam and cream a scone? Is a cucumber a fruit or vegetable? Which holds more Vit C an orange or kiwi fruit? Is it true that alliumphobia is a fear of garlic? Round three was all about hats but I’m afraid this also tested general knowledge from; the name of a Scottish beret to the name of the film which Odd Job and wearer of the bowler hat, was in? You had to know that a wearer of ‘toque blanche’ was a chef. There were no bonus points for knowing the number of pleats represented the number of ways that particular chef knew how to cook eggs – instead Andy simply liked to throw in general trivia, to add interest. Groans filled the room for round four when questioned the explanation of, numbers 45 and 47 worn by Donald Trump on his red baseball cap, which is that he is both the 45th and 47th President of USA. Debate followed, while pondering the answer of four - to “How many presidents have been assassinated whilst in office?” Memories were tested with the question of why Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were famous in modern history? Familiar names but many forgot of their ‘association’ with the Watergate scandal. The final and fifth round of music found everyone singing the first notes of the songs played but struggles ensued, to complete the places represented - such as the old crooner himself singing “New York New York” or Dionne Warwick singing, “Do you know the way to San Jose?“ Concluding, points were awarded but the ‘prize’ was a fun afternoon. Chairman Anne shared with members that she, together with Vice Chair Chris Ballett, had represented the club attending the Cannock Chase Council, when a ceremony was held to raise the Armed Forces Day Flag. She then closed the meeting with Chairman's Raffle and Pauls Prize.
