From the Stockmen to the Raiders: Goulburn's Jamie Cowling is rising fast
@Source: goulburnpost.com.au
Jamie Cowling has known he wanted to play rugby league for a living since he was 13 years old. Now at age 18, the former Goulburn Junior Stockman has signed an upgraded NRL development pathways contract with the Canberra Raiders. Matt Cowling has watched his son's progression since day one. He says talent is only a small part of the story. "There are plenty with talent who don't go on to do anything with it," Matt said. "But to actually do it and show such dedication is something else. "Jamie's always worked hard and shown 100 per cent commitment to the cause." Matt says last year was a big step forward for his son - Jamie was originally slated to play for the Monaro Colts under-18s but managed to secure a place as a half-back for the Raiders in the SG Ball Cup under-19s, after putting on eight kilograms to meet their minimum weight requirement. "That's when the Raiders really saw how serious he was," Matt said. The young gun is performing well in the 2025 SG Ball Squad this year, and is tentatively hopeful for a shot at the Jersey Flegg Cup next year, his father said. The recent contract with the Raiders marks a significant step forward in the young player's career, according to Justin Smallshaw, lead agent and owner of Caliber Sports Group. "He's secured a deal that not only rewards his talent and potential but also places a strong emphasis on his development as a player," Smallshaw said. "The contract ensures he's in the right environment to continue improving and learning from experienced coaches and players." Smallshaw says the contract represents an opportunity for Jamie to refine his game and take the next step towards reaching his full potential in the NRL. Jamie's strongest position is in the halves, but his well-rounded skillset makes him effective in both defensive and offensive positions, his manager says. Matt says it's been a long journey from North Park in Goulburn to Raiders Belconnen in the ACT, and Jamie has had solid mentors in Goulburn alumni Jarrod Croker, Todd Carney, and Mitch Cornish. Former Raider Sam Williams has also been instrumental in the young player's development over the last three years. Matt is grateful to all of them for their advice and training. "We've known them for years, and they've always given their time," he said. Matt says Cornish has been especially helpful over the last year. "The knowledge he's shared with Jamie out of the goodness of his heart has been unbelievable," he said. "We can't thank him enough." Jamie looks set to continue Goulburn's long-standing rugby league tradition. He may have moved to Canberra, but Matt says Jamie still comes home to Goulburn whenever he can. He often spends his time training at the Workers Arena - the Goulburn Bulldogs' home ground. Matt praises his son's dedication. "The sacrifices he's making to follow his dreams are staggering," he said. "I'm extremely proud of him."
