On March 23, the Irish News reported that a man had been arrested in northern France following the death of William Cooper, originally from Coleraine, following an alleged altercation. The media outlet said that Mr Cooper, who lived in Bournemouth, was discovered in Dunkirk on St Patrick’s Day. A fishmonger by trade, he had been working in France for a few weeks before the incident on March 17. The newspaper reported that a man suspected of involvement in Mr Cooper’s death was arrested near a railway station. A JustGiving appeal started by a friend of Mr Cooper to “fund a funeral and memorial service for our beloved William” has raised £11,000. Some of the comments from donors included: “Your infectious laugh will never be forgotten” and “Had a heart of gold”. In a notice of funeral arrangements, Mr Cooper was described as a “dearly loved husband of Natalie, devoted dad of Trinity, a dear son of William and the late Sandra, loving brother of David, Victoria, Ross, Samantha, Gary and Joshua, beloved uncle of Lucas, Billie, Harry, Izabella, Darcie, Ellowyn, Tommy and Lyla, also a dearly loved son-in-law of Nadine and a treasured nephew and friend.” A funeral service will be held in Murdock’s Funeral Home, Coleraine, on Saturday, April 5 at 3pm, followed by a private cremation. The notice continued: “Family and friends warmly welcome at Coleraine Rugby Club on Saturday from 4pm, to celebrate William’s life.”
