Gabby Logan has spoken candidly about her feelings when she began to notice the effects of ageing. The BBC Sport presenter, who tonight fronts coverage of the opening night of the Women's Rugby World Cup , describes experiencing a "seismic" shift as she moved from her forties into her fifties. The 52-year-old explains that she needed to educate herself about subjects such as perimenopause and menopause as she matured. This knowledge enabled her to comprehend what was occurring within her own body. Logan has previously discussed her battles with cognitive cloudiness during her 40s caused by perimenopause. She reveals that she would frequently find herself unable to remember words or names whilst broadcasting live. In conversation with Woman's Weekly, she has now discussed the pivotal moment when she acknowledged she was ageing. She revealed: "At first, I thought, 'This is rubbish. I'm getting older suddenly'. "It felt very abrupt. One minute I was fine, then suddenly I was sliding into this abyss of ageing I didn't want to go into." Logan stated that choosing to study the ageing process assisted her in accepting what was happening. This also motivated her to pen her Midpoint Plan book and create her podcast. She has made it her goal to inform other women about the ageing journey. Logan compares this mission to educating a teenager about adolescence. "We're lucky to live in a time when there's so much information about hormones. It makes a huge difference," she explains. Logan characterised her initial encounters with perimenopause as feeling "alien" to her. This was especially true when she discovered herself "umming a bit" during live television. Speaking to The Telegraph, Gabby said: "I didn't realise when I first started to experience the symptoms, [and] it was so alien to me to not be able to recall that I was starting to think, 'Oh God, I just can't remember stuff any more'. "I was always so good at recall. I got through a law degree basically just by going, 'Ah, page 32, Smith versus Cook'. I was always good with names, finding the right word at the right time, and I'd find myself umming a bit or using 'very, very, very...' "Then, when I realised it was a symptom of perimenopause, it was actually a relief, like it normally is when you realise something is part of a process and you can do something about it." Logan tackled her memory issues by writing things down on paper. She's also taking part in brain-boosting exercises, including attempting to memorise six-digit numbers for later recall and fighting the temptation to use Google for information she already possesses. Meanwhile, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has also helped to improve her memory function. Logan will be fronting coverage of England's World Cup opener against the USA in Sunderland tonight. She is also back on television with Match of the Day at the weekends. The mother-of-two was announced as one of the programme's presenters, alongside Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates, earlier this year. The presenting team takes over from Gary Lineker, who stood down in May.
