Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday drew a ‘golden line’ in state sport on Saturday, unveiling the ambitious sports policy which plans to boost athletes and power India to podiums on the world stage. It’s game on.Built on five pillars — governance and organisation, sports ecosystem, long-term athlete development, infrastructure and skills development and career pathways — the policy is aimed at identifying talent at the grassroot and nurturing them to be world beaters. A former footballer, the CM was on the ball as he spoke about his vision. “The policy has been arrived at after deep thought. It is not just a paper but a golden line,” he said, triggering applause from sports enthusiasts in the HICC hall here. Gold is indeed central to the policy, which was born in Paris last year. “When I saw that India could not win even one gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, I had resolved to bring in the Sports Policy which would create a strong platform for athletes. I am hopeful that an Olympic gold medallist will rise from Telangana, for this project is a part of the Telangana Rising 2047 vision,” the Chief Minister said. “We want to regain the lost sporting glory of the state,” Revanth Reddy said, pointing to nine players from Hyderabad being on the Indian football team that finished fourth at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Assuring full support to the governing board which includes sportspersons of eminence like Olympic gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra, Cricket World Cup winning cricket captain Kapil Dev, former football captain Baichung Bhutia, national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand, he assured Bindra, “I’m just a call away,” as claps rang around. The CM also informed that the government had requested the Centre to allot the 2026 Khelo India Games to the state. “When India gets to host the 2036 Olympics, Telangana would like to host one of the verticals,” he said.
