Gary Neville announces Old Trafford return as Manchester United legend releases statement

Gary Neville will make a surprise return to the Old Trafford pitch this summer as part of Soccer Aid. The former Manchester United captain made 602 appearances for his boyhood club between 1992 and 2011. Neville has made the fifth most appearances for United, with only Ryan Giggs, Sir Bobby Charlton, Bill Foulkes and Paul Scholes ahead of him. The ex-full-back has since gone on to have a successful career in the media for Sky Sports as a pundit and co-commentator. He has also launched several businesses' including hotels, a production company, and a property development company. And Neville has confirmed that he will represent an England XI in a Soccer Aid charity match at M16 on Sunday, June 15. " Manchester United fans, I’m back at Old Trafford !" he said via a post on Soccer Aid's Instagram account. "You can watch me take on the Soccer Aid World XI on Sunday 15th June. Tickets available now!" Other names to have been announced include fellow United legends Scholes and Wayne Rooney , as well as One Direction star Louis Tomlinson and Dragons Den's Steven Bartlett. Neville's England XI will take on a World XI line-up that includes Euro 2020 winner Leonardo Bonucci, AC Milan women's player Nadia Nadim and Strictly Come Dancing star Gorka Marquez. Neville's appearance at Old Trafford this summer may be one of his final matches at United's famous stadium. The club announced on Tuesday that they plan to build a new 100,000-seater stadium which would see the current one demolished. "Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest football stadium, at the centre of a regenerated Old Trafford," said Reds co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe . Foster + Partners, the architecture group appointed to design the stadium district, unveiled conceptual images and scaled models of the new stadium and surrounding area on Tuesday . United aim to complete construction within the next five years.
