Gophers football: Top in-state prospect Roman Voss picks U over Alabama

The Gophers football program has pulled off another big recruiting win inside Minnesota, landing the top in-state prospect in three straight recruiting classes.
Roman Voss, an athlete from Jackson County Central, placed Minnesota and the Alabama Crimson Tide in his final two a weeks ago and picked the Gophers on Monday.
Voss, a four-star recruit and a top 15 athlete in the nation in the 2026 class, becomes the top-rated recruit in the U’s class for next year. After visiting Dinkytown on May 30-June 1, the 6-foot-4, 225-pounder went on an official visit to Tuscaloosa, Ala., last weekend.
“All Glory to God. Home,” Voss wrote on X.
Minnesota netted the previous two top-ranked in-state players in Robbinsdale Cooper linebacker Emmanuel Karmo (2025) and Esko safety Koi Perich (2024). The top player in 2023 — Cooper defensive end Jaxon Howard initially went to Louisiana State for his freshman year before transferring to the U in 2024.
Voss was a big priority for the Gophers, with the entire offensive coaching staff going to his home in early January. It appeared Voss would be a hot commodity within the Big Ten, with Iowa receiving early attention, but the stiffest competition ended up being Alabama, with head coach Kaleb DeBoer being from nearby South Dakota and coaching at Sioux Falls early in his career.
Voss has played quarterback and safety at the Class 2A school, but projects to a tight end in college. He has endured season-ending injuries in the state tournament the previous two years and will need to stay healthy to live up to the hype.
Longtime Jackson County Central head coach Tom Schuller told the Pioneer Press he believes Voss is the best player he has ever coached and can be “an NFL-caliber tight end.”
The U’s 2026 class has already received pledges from the No. 2 and 3 recruits in Minnesota — Forest Lake defensive lineman Howie Johnson and Cold Spring offensive lineman Andrew Trout.
— On Sunday, the Gophers gained a commitment from Trason Richardson, a three-star safety from Rosharon, Texas, for its 2026 class. The 6-foot, 180-pound product had more than a dozen offers but none from the Power Four conferences.
