Alexander's Mistake Proves Costly
Smith, making a short start before heading to the All-Star Game, tossed three innings before turning it over to Dan Altavilla, who recorded five outs and left a runner on third for Tyler Alexander.
The veteran lefty escaped the fifth but left a cutter over the plate with two outs in the sixth, and Carlos Santana crushed it to left-center to give the Guardians a 4-2 lead.
One Hit, One Highlight
Logan Allen made the start for Cleveland, and the White Sox looked poised to rack up some runs with a group of righties who've hit left-handed pitching well this season. Instead, they made things look easy for Allen—or maybe Allen just made it look easy.
After Robert's homer, the Sox didn't record another hit off the lefty. Allen cruised through six innings, allowing just two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out five.
News and Notes
The White Sox recalled left-handed reliever Fraser Ellard from Triple-A Charlotte to serve as the 27th man of the twin-bill. Ellard fanned a hitter in a clean ninth inning.
