A man celebrating his honeymoon has died after he was hit by a freak lightning strike on a beach, according to authorities. The 29-year-old unnamed victim, who was visiting from Colorado, was on his honeymoon with his wife when he was struck on Symrna Beach, Florida, last Friday. Emergency services and beachgoers quickly rushed to the scene and performed CPR and transported him to a nearby hospital in a critical condition. Tragically, he died on Saturday from his injuries. Meanwhile, two golfers were also struck on June 20 at around midday at the Venetian Bay Golf Course. Emergency crews from the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department checked over both golfers on scene. Neither required transport to a hospital. "This serves as an important reminder of, 'When thunder roars, go indoors,'" said Ava Hanner, public information officer for the City of New Smyrna Beach. "If you can hear thunder, you're close enough to be struck by lightning, even if the sky looks clear." According to recent studies, Florida is one of the states in the US that received the most lightning strikes - 18.7 million - in 2022. Data analysis revealed that the Sunshine State received 285 lightning strikes per square mile over the year. Meanwhile, four footballers were killed by a lightning strike as they sheltered under a tree back in February. Jeidy Morales, Daniela Mosquera, Luz Lame and Etelvina Mosquera reportedly hid in a pitchside shed when their game was halted due to the thunderstorm. A lightning bolt struck a tree in Cajibio, Colombia and the four women died. A man who was with them died in hospital while two other women suffered serious burns, local media reports. Tributes have poured in to the women, who were taking part in a football tournament at the time. One friend posted online: "What sad news. Rest in peace Daniela." The tragedy comes after a footballer was killed and five others injured after being hit by lightning during a match in Peru recently. Several players were struck by a lightning bolt as they attempted to leave the field of play when the referee paused the tie. Video footage shows eight of them collapsing after a loud crack. And in 2021, nine-year-old Jordan Banks died in Blackpool, Lancashire , after he struck by lightning during a football coaching session. His stepfather could only watch in horror from the car as the young boy was suddenly struck by lightning as he played.
