It’s been a long four years, but Michelle Zauner’s beloved indie pop act Japanese Breakfast is finally back as For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), the band’s fourth album, released on Friday.
For Melancholy Brunettes follows the critically acclaimed Jubilee, which became Japanese Breakfast’s most successful project so far, earning Zauner Grammy nominations for best new artist and best alternative music album at the 64th Grammys back in 2022.
Zauner announced the new album back in January, sharing the album’s lead single “Orlando In Love” the same day. She released the follow-up single “Mega Circuit” a month later. Blake Mills, whose production credits include tracks for Fiona Apple, Perfume Genius, Dawes and Alabama Shakes among others, produced the project.
In celebration of the album’s release, Japanese Breakfast are playing a sold-out show at El Museo Del Barrio in New York on Saturday. Japanese Breakfast will hit the road in support of the album soon, starting with sets at Coachella for the first time since 2022 next month.
Outside of music, Zauner also published her New York Times best-selling memoir Crying in H Mart back in 2021. The book was picked up for a film adaptation that same year, with White Lotus star Will Sharpe tapped to direct the project in 2023. Zauner told Ssense earlier this year that Sharpe is no longer directing the film and said the project is “not happening anytime soon.”
She said, “Right now, I’m focusing on other creative projects, so the film will have to wait.”
