Despite breaking his driver early in Round 4 at The Open, Sergio Garcia delivered an impressive performance by adapting quickly and leaning on precision over power. The 45-year-old snapped his driver in frustration after a tee shot on the second hole at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. Under tournament rules, players cannot replace a club broken in anger during a round.— NUCLRGOLF (@NUCLRGOLF) The Spaniard completed the final 16 holes of his 26th major appearance without a driver in the bag. Yet, despite losing one of the most important clubs in his bag, Garcia delivered his best performance of the week on Sunday. "I’ve done that 50 times, and I’ve never broken a club," Garcia told reporters on his return to the clubhouse. Live EventsGarcía said he hadn’t intended to break the club and was 'surprised' when it snapped in half."I don’t know, maybe the shaft had a little thing there because I didn’t feel like with what I did it should have broken, but that’s what it was, and then I got some good practice when I threw it."Despite a shaky tee shot on the par-5 second hole, Garcia recovered to make birdie - one of five on the day. He added just two bogeys to his scorecard and posted a 3-under 68, his only round under 70 all week. Garcia, tied for 34th, closed out The Open with a 3-under total of 281 - his strongest round of the tournament.(You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel)
