The riverside McCallum Park Active Area redevelopment is now open to the public after a year of works to improve its facilities. The works, which began mid-2024, include a new BMX pump track, new competition-ready skate and soccer facilities including a large skateable plaza and flow bowl, spectator areas, community gathering spaces, revitalised basketball courts, and barbecues and landscaping upgrades. The $4.8 million project was co-funded by the Commonwealth Communities program, which contributed $2.5m, and the State Government ($926,653), with the rest coming from the Town of Victoria Park. The works were part of a bigger Taylor Reserve and McCallum Park masterplan created by the town in 2017 which aims to revitalise and guide future developments of “key riverside parklands”. The State Government’s Causeway pedestrian and cyclist bridges enable more people to get to the park. Town mayor Karen Vernon said last December it would be an exciting boost to the town’s sporting facilities and a great regional destination for young people. “The addition of competition-ready skate and scooter facilities, all-ages BMX pump tracks, revamped outdoor basketball courts and community gathering spaces will see McCallum Park re-join the list of premier inner-city recreation destinations.” she said at the time. “The Active Area will be fully accessible by pedestrian and cycle paths from South Perth to Burswood and beyond, and by public transport and the new city-link bridge, further encouraging active modes of transport around our beautiful Swan River foreshore.” An official launch party for the area will be held on October 19.
