A fast-moving storm traveling through the Northeast with a 'dangerous' combination of snow and sleet has forced hundreds of flights to be canceled as thousands go without power.
The wild weather kicked off Saturday evening across portions of the Upper Great Lakes and intensified as it moved east - covering major cities including Boston and New York in white.
More than 3,300 flights to, from or within the US were delayed and at least 300 were canceled on Saturday, according to Flight Aware.
'Due to a winter storm across the northeast, Boston Logan expects delays and cancellations,' the airport said on Saturday afternoon.
Philadelphia International Airport also acknowledged the weather has affected their flights ahead of Super Bowl Sunday.
About 68 million people from the Midwest to the Northeast are under severe winter weather warnings, CNN reported.
'One good thing with this storm, it is moving pretty quickly, so it’s not gonna be a prolonged winter weather event,' said Bob Oravec, lead forecaster with the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland, told the Associated Press.
'It looks like the snow will definitely be coming to an end earlier in the day on Sunday, after which the weather will be fairly tranquil for a few days.'
A mix of sleet, snow and freezing rain is expected to make driving risky, according to forecasters. The brunt of the storm reportedly began at 8pm and is set to end around 2am, according to CBS.
NYC officials have warned residents about reduced visibility and slippery roads resulting from the anticipated three to five inches of snow and sleet.
'This weekend's winter weather will make getting around difficult, with snow and potentially freezing rain creating slippery and icy conditions,' said New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol.
Mayor Eric Adams announced on Friday: 'Our city agencies are ready to answer the call and keep New Yorkers safe as we expect freezing temperatures and snowfall this weekend.
New York City Emergency Management Department (NYCEM) has warned that the forecasted conditions are creating 'slushy, thick roadways.'
On Friday, Governor Kathy Hochul issued a state of emergency and initiated storm protocols, including faster salt deliveries.
In Philadelphia, a weather advisory has been issued until Sunday at 6 am. But beyond the major city, other areas have faced the negative effects of the storm.
In the entire state of Pennsylvania, more than 4,300 power outages have been reported. Over 1,500 of those outages are concentrated in Somerset, according to a power outage tracker.
Most of New York has apparently kept its lights on, but in Long Island's Suffolk County, roughly 80 homes have lost power, the tracker revealed.
Green Bay, Wisconsin had about 7.5 inches of snow on Saturday evening, according to the NWS.
Chicago, Illinois saw minimal snow accumulation, but emergency management warned that frozen rain and snow flurries will cause 'slick' conditions.
In Cleveland, Ohio residents endured only about an inch of built-up snow and sleet, and minimal ice accumulation, according to CNN.
Boston's weather warning will be in effect until Sunday afternoon, as the area is anticipating up to six inches of snow this weekend.
