I spotted Ruben Amorim shouting at Manchester United player - before admitting his own mistake
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
Manchester United lost 1-0 against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Tuesday night.
Anthony Elanga has been in tremendous form and he opened the scoring against his former club within three minutes, picking up the ball in his own half and embarking on a superb run.
United attempted to respond to that early setback and looked capable of finding a way back into the game, but they disappointed in the second half and the home side won three points.
Here are the moments you might have missed from the game...
Amorim's message for Zirkzee
Just a few moments after the first whistle, Ruben Amorim shouted at Joshua Zirkzee in an animated fashion, frantically waving his arms and ordering Zirkzee into a more advanced position.
It was surprising to see Ramus Hojlund moved to the bench after his well-taken goal against Leicester, especially when considering the bank of evidence that suggests Zirkzee is not a striker.
Amorim said Hojlund lost his place for "tactical reasons" but United's head coach seemed to regret his decision within minutes of the game starting. Zirkzee has a tendency to drop into deeper positions and Amorim needed to cajole him forward to encourage him into the right area.
Zirkzee has found a home in one of the No.10 roles and was essentially played out of position against Nottingham Forest, so it was no surprise to see Amorim admit his mistake at half-time.
Amorim introduced Hojlund for Manuel Ugarte at the interval and dropped Fernandes back into the double pivot, which meant Zirkzee was relocated to the role he's improved in.
Elanga didn't celebrate
Elanga looked in the zone when he arrived at the City Ground, wearing headphones as he entered the stadium on his own, and it didn't take long for him to prove a point to United.
Elanga opened the scoring within five minutes after running practically the entire length of the pitch, and he declined to celebrate out of respect to his former club, despite being mobbed by his teammates.
"He left cause you're s***," chanted the Nottingham Forest fans when play resumed, although that is not true. Elanga departed in the summer of 2023 because Erik ten Hag decided he wasn't good enough to be a regular starter, but the 22-year-old deserves huge credit for building his career elsewhere.
Elanga has proven himself in the Premier League and most supporters now regret his departure, however, he wouldn't have become the player he currently is without consistent starts.
Garnacho didn't look himself
Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho practiced shots before kick-off and the latter fired a shot from over the bar from seven yards. Whether what happens in a warm-up matters is debatable, but it was a bad miss from Garnacho and he looked to the ground, seemingly a tad embarrassed.
Garnacho then subsequently disappointed during the match, taking heavy touches and failing to have an impact, which made his demeanour in the warm-up feel more significant.
Fernandes' appearance record
Bruno Fernandes made his 278th appearance for United against Nottingham Forest, which meant he equalled the number of appearances that Luke Shaw has made (278) in Manchester.
That is a remarkable statistic considering Shaw joined United in June 2014 and Fernandes arrived from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020. Fernandes has been an ever-present in the starting team, and he will deserve a third Sir Matt Busy Award at the end of the season, which he's a shoo-in for.
United were disappointing against Forest, but Fernandes emerged with credit and never stopped trying to make something happen. If only United had a team of players of his calibre.
Kone back in the squad
You'd be forgiven for not taking much notice of Sekou Kone and Harry Amass being named on the bench at the City Ground. Amass was finally given his first-team debut against Leicester before the international break but Kone was last named in a squad against Everton at Goodison Park.
Amass was absent from the Under-18 squad for the FA Youth Cup semi-final on Monday night, so he was expected to be named on the bench, but it was a small surprise to see Kone involved.
Kone has been around the senior squad in the last two months and recently scored a wonderful academy goal, but he still needs to physically mature to feature in Premier League matches.
Ineos have overhauled the recruitment strategy at Old Trafford and signing Kone, an unproven young player with high potential, felt like one of the first of many of those particular transfers.
