Amid the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan, the arch-rivals are set to face each other in the upcoming Asia Cup. This continental championship, played in the T20 format, will commence on September 9 in the UAE. Legendary Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram has urged both players and fans to maintain their composure when the two teams meet. India and Pakistan will clash in Dubai on September 14, with a potential rematch in the Super Four on September 21, and possibly a third encounter if both teams advance to the final. “I am sure these matches will be entertaining, just like all other India-Pakistan matches. But I hope both the players and the fans will remain disciplined and do not cross the line,” Akram told Telecom Asia Sport. Highlighting the global attention these matches attract, the former Pakistan captain noted: “Games between India and Pakistan are watched by billions around the world,” adding that the Asia Cup offers the perfect stage for intense yet respectful competition. Akram also mentioned that India, given their strong recent form, will start as favourites. However, he emphasised that the outcome will ultimately depend on handling the pressure. “If Indians are patriotic and want their team to win, the same goes for Pakistani fans. India has been in better form recently and will start as favourites, but the team that handles pressure best on the day will win,” he said. Akram expressed his support for Pakistan’s young squad led by Salman Ali Agha, while also admitting his desire to see Babar Azam in the team. “Personally, I wanted to see Babar Azam in the team, but since he’s not been selected, it’s up to those in the squad to step up,” he remarked. Looking beyond the Asia Cup, Akram hopes for a revival of bilateral Test cricket between the two nations. “This Asia Cup will be a feast for fans worldwide. It’s my wish that India and Pakistan also resume playing a Test series. It’s been too long, and it would be a historic spectacle for fans on both sides,” he added.
