The International Cricket Council (ICC) has promised greater support for Afghan women cricketers who were forced into exile after the Taliban banned women from playing sports in 2021. Most of these players fled the country and resettled in places like Australia, where they played a symbolic match earlier this year in Melbourne without wearing the official national crest.
During its annual conference held in Singapore over the weekend, the ICC shared new developments in its women’s cricket initiative for Afghanistan. According to a statement released on Sunday, the program is designed to provide structured support and opportunities to help the displaced players return to regular competition. The ICC highlighted that this includes domestic matches and engagement at upcoming global events.
Specifically, the ICC’s support will enable Afghan players to take part in activities around the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 in India and the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England. While exact plans were not detailed, the initiative will also provide access to international players and professional development workshops led by experienced coaches. These efforts aim to rebuild confidence and skills among the exiled athletes.
Moreover, the program is the result of a joint effort by the cricket boards of India, England, and Australia, under the leadership of ICC deputy chair Imran Khwaja. This collaborative approach shows a growing commitment to keeping women’s cricket alive for Afghan players, even without formal recognition from their home country. The support comes at a crucial time when most of these women are still adjusting to life in exile.
Although challenges remain, the initiative offers hope and a path forward for these athletes. It not only ensures their continued participation in cricket but also keeps the spirit of Afghan women’s sports alive on the international stage. With backing from major cricketing nations, the ICC is sending a strong message about inclusion and opportunity in global sports.
