Idris Elba, Wyclef Jean, Tems, comedian Katherine Ryan and Deepak Chopra are among the first big names confirmed for the European debut of South by Southwest at SXSW London this summer. “At this festival of convergence, attendees will hear from industry leaders at the cutting edge of what is new and future-facing alongside some of the world’s biggest talent from across music, film, tech and culture at the inaugural festival in Shoreditch,” organizers said. “SXSW London will include everything that attendees have come to expect from SXSW including talks, music and screen, alongside a focus on new themes, including visual arts and fashion.” Founded in 1987 in Austin, SXSW previously expanded into the Asia Pacific region with SXSW Sydney in 2023. Organizers have said that each of these events will feature “their own distinct flavor,” making SXSW “an indispensable three-stop tour for the global creative community.” Exploring the intersections between film, art and music will be the curatorial focus behind SXSW London’s Screen Festival. “Across a program of feature films, shorts, music videos, there will also be a curated selection of immersive works,” organizers said. “A meeting point for international screen industries, the Screen Festival will also host conversation-starting panels and inspiring talent talks that speak to the future of screen-based storytelling.” Newly unveiled on Tuesday, the festival will present the first U.K. film retrospective of Grammy Award-winning artist and filmmaker Jenn Nkiru, including the London premiere of her latest work The Great North, co-produced by Factory International and Mothershop. Meanwhile, SXSW London’s conference program promises to “explore an extraordinary convergence of themes across tracks, including innovation, society, robotics and AI.” First confirmed conference headliners include Elba, Jean, Chopra, Ryan, electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre and fitness coach and author Joe Wicks. “The names we’re announcing today embody the groundbreaking ideas, creative energy and collaborative ethos that SXSW London will bring to Europe for the first time,” said Max Alexander, CEO of SXSW London. “From redefining industries to spotlighting cutting-edge music scenes, this is just the beginning of what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of global creativity.” Finally, the SXSW London’s Music Festival has unveiled Tems, the Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and producer, as its first headliner. She will take the stage on June 5 at London’s Troxy. And “in a world first, Abbey Road Studios will bring Abbey Road: Studio Four to SXSW London – a new concept encompassing live music, inspiring conversations and immersive experiences,” organizers said. “Reflecting their core themes of music creativity, innovation and learning, this unique collaboration will highlight the continuing cultural relevance and innovative spirit of Abbey Road for festival delegates.” SXSW London will take place June 2-7. Penske Media, the parent company of The Hollywood Reporter, is the majority stakeholder of SXSW.
