Star middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan, who has 371 runs to his name in six Test matches for India, on Monday (August 18) scored a century for Ayush Mhatre-led Mumbai team in their first match of the ongoing Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament. In the match taking place at Gojan Cricket Ground B against TNCA XI, Sarfaraz came out to bat at No. 5 for the Mumbai team and was batting on 134 runs from 109 balls at the end of 71 overs. He has hammered 10 fours and 6 sixes so far. Sarfaraz, who scored twin fifties on his Test debut for India against England in Rajkot last year and 150 in the second innings of the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand in November 2024, was ignored by the BCCI selectors on May 24 for the five-match Test series in England. In his absence, Karun Nair batted at No. 6 for India in the series opener against Ben Stokes & Co. Sarfaraz, who has a batting average of 65.98 in first-class cricket, has worked on his fitness in the recent months and with his century now has presented a case for selection in India’s squad for the upcoming home series against the West Indies and South Africa. India will face the West Indies from October 2 to 14 in Ahmedabad and Delhi and the two Tests against the South African team are scheduled to take place in Kolkata (November 14-18) and Guwahati (November 22-26). After representing Mumbai in ongoing Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament, Sarfaraz will play for West Zone in the Duleep Trophy. The 2025 edition of the Duleep Trophy will be played from August 28 to September 11. Sarfaraz will play under the leadership of Shardul Thakur in Duleep Trophy. Apart from Sarfaraz, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer are also part of West Zone Duleep Trophy squad.
