Immanuel Feyi-Waboso makes England squad for Argentina and USA tour despite two-match ban

England have named Immanuel Feyi-Waboso in the squad for their summer tour to Argentina and the United States, despite his suspension. The Exeter wing was included by Steve Borthwick in a 36-man group named on Monday to contest two Tests against the Pumas next month, before a one-off clash against the USA. That is despite Feyi-Waboso being banned for the pair of matches in Argentina following his red card in Saturday’s eventful non-cap England XV international against France, which the hosts lost 26-24 in last-gasp fashion. The 22-year-old was picked to make his first appearance since December at Allianz Stadium Twickenham after recovering from shoulder surgery, but a long-awaited return to action proved disastrous as he received a yellow card from referee Hollie Davidson for a dangerous high tackle on French fly-half Antoine Hastoy late in the first half that was upgraded to a 20-minute red following a bunker review. Borthwick expressed his sympathy for Feyi-Waboso and said that he expected to hear on any additional punishment within 24 hours before deciding on what to do moving forward. An Independent Foul Play Review Committee subsequently ruled that Feyi-Waboso’s tackle carried a “high degree of danger”, handing him a three-match suspension reduced to two upon the completion of a coaching intervention programme. It means he will not be available for either England’s game with Argentina in La Plata on July 5 or in San Juan on July 12, though a successful completion of that aforementioned programme would put him in contention to return against the USA in Washington D.C. on July 19. Feyi-Waboso’s dismissal against France also appeared to deal a potentially decisive blow to his chances of earning a late call-up for the British and Irish Lions during their summer tour to Australia, which begins against Super Rugby’s Western Force in Perth on Saturday following the 1888 Cup defeat by Argentina in Dublin. Alongside Feyi-Waboso, Borthwick has named 10 uncapped players to travel to Buenos Aires after a training session at Pennyhill Park on Tuesday, including four who played at the weekend, led by Bath’s influential Premiership-title winning flanker Guy Pepper, plus Gloucester centre Seb Atkinson, Sale full-back Joe Carpenter and versatile Harlequins back Oscar Beard. That quartet are joined by fellow uncapped players Charlie Atkinson and Arthur Clark of Gloucester, Bath duo Max Ojomoh and Will Muir, Northampton prop Emmanuel Iyogun and Harlequins centre Luke Northmore. As against France in the absence of usual skipper Maro Itoje, the squad will be led by co-captains Jamie George and George Ford, the former of whom returned from a training sojourn with the Lions to play at the weekend. Ford is set to earn his 100th cap in Argentina. Tighthead Asher Opoku-Fordjour and scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet also trained with the Lions before the game against Argentina, but are named in England’s summer squad. Fin Smith, Marcus Smith, Tom Curry, Ben Earl, Ellis Genge, Will Stuart, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Tommy Freeman, Elliot Daly, Henry Pollock, Ollie Chessum and Alex Mitchell are the England players to have gone on tour with the Lions. Joe Batley, Fraser Dingwall, George Furbank, Ollie Lawrence, Alex Lozowski, George Martin and Ollie Sleightholme are all unavailable to Borthwick due to injury, though Harry Randall and Ben Curry are fit to feature after continuing their respective rehabilitations with England last week, along with Dingwall and Furbank. “The three-Test series is a huge challenge and a valuable opportunity for the continued development of this squad,” said Borthwick. “For some of the younger players, this will be their first experience of touring overseas with England. “Travelling together helps strengthen team bonds and offers a valuable chance for new players to integrate into our environment. “It’s an exciting test for us, and we’re looking forward to seeing how we continue to evolve as a team.” Forwards (20): F Baxter (Harlequins), A Clark (Gloucester), A Coles (Northampton), C Cunningham-South (Harlequins), B Curry (Sale), T Dan (Saracens), T Davison (Northampton), A Dombrandt (Harlequins), C Ewels (Bath), J George (Saracens, co-capt), J Heyes (Leicester), T Hill (Bath), N Isiekwe (Saracens), E Iyogun (Northampton) C Langdon (Northampton), A Opoku-Fordjour (Sale), G Pepper (Bath), B Rodd (Sale), S Underhill (Bath), T Willis (Saracens).
