THE International Maritime Organization (IMO) has officially opened its first Regional Presence Office for the Pacific in Suva, Fiji. The new office will support Pacific Island countries in maritime safety, governance, and decarbonization efforts. It will also strengthen IMO’s outreach and technical cooperation across the region. Fiji’s Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, said the opening was a major milestone. “The commissioning marks a milestone in the partnership between the Pacific and the IMO,” he said. “This office is the first of its kind in our region.” He said maritime transport was essential to Pacific livelihoods, linking communities to health, education and trade. “We have over 4,000 registered vessels operating across our maritime zones,” he said. “There are more than just vessels – they are lifelines.” The Minister said Pacific countries face maritime challenges that require sustained support. He welcomed the IMO’s presence in Suva. “The office provides a regional mechanism to help address these challenges,” he said. It will ensure Pacific countries can meet global obligations and contribute to international dialogue.” IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez travelled to Fiji to open the office. It was his first visit to the Pacific. “The Pacific may be distant from London, but your commitment is clear,” he said. “This office reflects IMO’s commitment to working with you.” He said the new PRO would coordinate training, technical assistance, and project support. “It is a hub for efficiency, innovation and results.” The IMO is also rolling out a new global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions form shipping. Domingues said Pacific countries must be part of that transition. “We are moving toward cleaner, smarter, and more resilient maritime solutions,” he said. “The Pacific must not be left behind.” The PRO will be based temporarily at the Pacific Community (SPC) Lotus Building. A permanent site is under discussion.
