LIV Golf star Anthony Kim shares battle with addiction after drug use during tournaments

LIV Golf star Anthony Kim has suggested that he used drugs while participating in major championships as he marks two years of sobriety. Once a rising star on the PGA Tour, Kim had three wins under his belt before turning 24 and was part of the victorious United States Ryder Cup team in 2008.
However, after a severe Achilles injury in 2012 that required surgery, Kim mysteriously disappeared from the professional golf scene, only to return in 2024 when he joined LIV as a wildcard player. The 39-year-old has since spoken candidly about his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction.
On Thursday, he shared a heartfelt post on Instagram discussing his past demons and how far he's come, including a photo of the many pills he had to take daily to safely withdraw from narcotics. He confessed to contemplating suicide "every day for almost two decades, even while playing on the PGA Tour and used drugs to "numb the pain," implying that he would take substances while playing in major championships.
"Two years sober. Biggest accomplishment of my life," Kim wrote. "I was barely physically able to walk into rehab needing assistance from my sober coach as my body was shutting down.
"I got so good at hiding it that I lost who I was. It's f****** hard playing majors making porta-potty stops every few holes."
Kim expressed his gratitude to his loved ones for their unwavering support. He went on to say: "In rehab I found faith, self love and respect and purpose. I am not proud of who I was but I am today. One of the many things I realised is how grateful we all need to be for what we have now and to spend time with real friends because tomorrow is not guaranteed.
"I promised myself when I was in the ER for six days that I would do everything I could to make a difference to show my daughter that it's never too late to keep trying. I am currently working on a few things that I know will change peoples' lives including a website where I will be sharing both good and bad experiences that hopefully others struggling can learn from."
Kim hopes his recovery journey can inspire other addicts to conquer their own battles. "This post isn't to tell everyone to get sober but for people who are letting addiction ruin their lives as I did that you can turn your life around," he stated. Kim joined LIV a year ago and has had a tough time finding form on the course, with the California native yet to score his first point.
However, the fact that he's playing at all after battling so intensely with addiction deserves immense commendation. He'll be back in action when LIV heads to Hong Kong on March 7.
