India Test captain Shubman Gill is reportedly unwell and is currently resting at his residence in Chandigarh. The development comes days after Gill was named in India’s 15-man squad for the next month’s Asia Cup 2025.
According to Cricbuzz, Gill was examined by physios recently with BCCI being informed a day before about his health. The 25-year-old returned to India’s T20I setup as vice-captain.
While Gill is expected to get fit for the continental tournament, the illness means he will end up skipping Duleep Trophy which marks the beginning of India’s domestic cricket season. He was named as the captain of North Zone.
The batting star was expected to give red-ball tourney a skip anyway because of him being part of the Asia Cup. The Duleep Trophy 2025 starts from August 28 and will conclude on September 15.
However, the Asia Cup starts from September 9 when Afghanistan face Hong Kong in Abu Dhabi. It meant Gill could have played in the opening round of the Duleep Trophy.
He now is expected to miss the entire competition.
Gill’s Replacement Ready
The North Zone selection committee had already anticipated such a scenario and already named Gill’s replacement in Shubham Rohilla. With Ankit Kumar named as the vice-captain, he will now be elevated to captaincy in Gill’s absence.
Two More India Cricketers To Skip Duleep Trophy
Besides Gill, the North Zone squad also comprises two more Asia Cup bound India players. The fast-bowling duo of Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana may feature in the opening round before leaving for UAE where the Asia Cup will be held.
BCCI Miffed
Meanwhile, the Indian cricket board has reportedly been unhappy at the non-selection of top India stars for the Duleep Trophy. BCCI general manager shot a letter to the state associations who didn’t pick the India Test cricketers including KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Prasidh Krishna and Sai Sudharsan.
“To uphold its prestige and ensure the highest quality of competition, it’s imperative that all currently available India players are selected for their respective zonal teams. Requesting the Zonal Convenors to ensure that all the current India players who are available to play Duleep trophy should be picked,” The Indian Express quoted the letter sent by Kuruvilla to state associations.
