Inside Hannah Tyrrell's family life, including her wife and daughter, as she prepares for the All-Ireland final
@Source: irishmirror.ie
Hannah Tyrrell's decorated sports career may be coming to a close but the multi-talented athlete will be looking to go out on a high when Dublin take on Meath this Sunday.
Tyrrell has confirmed that this will be her last year playing elite-level sport and was coaxed back for one more year with the Dubs after their shock exit to Galway last season.
Fast forward a year and Tyrrell hit the all-important free to earn extra time against the very same team with Dublin winning in extra time.
Standing in Tyrrell's way of one last trophy is Meath, the rivalry between the two teams needs no introduction with the Royals winning memorable All-Ireland titles in 2021 and 2022.
When the two sides met in the Leinster final it was Dublin who won by four points, despite being pushed all the way.
Below we have a brief look at Hannah Tyrrell's sporting and personal life as she waves goodbye to elite level sport.
Where is she from at what age is she?
Born in August 1990, Hannah will turn 35 a week after Sunday's All-Ireland final. She was raised in Clondalkin and attended Colaiste Bride School.
She went on to attend Trinity College, where she studied psychiatric nursing before dropping out and changing her studies. She graduated with a degree in history and geography from UCD in 2016.
Sports Career
There are few, if any, athletes with the career that Tyrrell has carved out for herself. Tyrrell played soccer with St Catherine's, where she competed in two FAI Cup finals, winning in 2011.
Tyrrell would make a movie into Rugby Union and made her Ireland debut in 2015. She was part of the last Irish team to win the Six Nations in 2015 and also went to the Rugby World Cup in 2017.
Prior to her rugby career, Tyrrell had played for the Dublin footballers and rejoined the setup in 2021. At the time, Dublin were chasing the five-in-a-row but were shocked by Meath. She would get her hands on the Brendan Martin Cup in 2023 when Dublin returned to the summit once more.
Marriage to wife and new baby
Hannah tied the knot with her partner Sorcha Turnbull in August 2021. Both brides stunned on the day in white dresses with beaded bodices - though Hannah went for a plunging V-neckline, while Sorcha's featured a high neck.
The couple are the proud parents Aoife Tyrrell Turnbull, who was born in June 2023, just weeks before the All-Ireland final. Aoife joined her mammy on the pitch as part of the celebrations.
Mental Health Struggles
Tyrrell has not shyed away from her mental health struggles that included an eating disorder and self-harm, which started when she was 12 and lasted until she was 24.
"I struggled with an eating disorder and with self harm when I was a young teenager and it went on for quite a while," she told RSVP.
"I'd always been a high achiever and so I set myself some very, very unrealistic goals, and obviously, then I kept failing to achieve those goals because they were so unrealistic.
"I just got into a negative mindset of not being good enough and felt like I needed to punish myself and change who I was.
"To be honest, I didn't know too much about it at the time. I didn't really know what I was feeling, I just knew it wasn't what I probably should have been doing, but it was the way I coped.
"Back then there was no such thing as mental health or wellness week and stuff like that. I genuinely felt like I was the only person in the world who struggled with this.
"I was afraid of reaching out and asking for help in case they didn't understand."
