'Inspiring' Scots teenager battling skin cancer signs contract extension with West of Scotland League side

A Scots footballer who is battling skin cancer has signed a contract extension with his club. Teenager Charlie Watson has been playing for Threave Rovers this season despite undergoing treatment for stage four nodular malignant melonoma. And now the West of Scotland League side, who play in Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway , have signed the talented midfielder up for another year. Manager Danny Dunglinson said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Charlie has committed to a new deal. His journey has been well documented, but the way he carries himself and continues to push forward is nothing short of inspirational; a true testament to his character. “When I brought Charlie in, I said he would be my best signing, and that belief hasn’t changed. It’s no coincidence that our form dipped when he wasn’t on the pitch. “He’s a fighter, always proving people wrong, and we couldn’t be more proud to have him with us. “Keep battling, wee man. We can’t wait to see you back in that number four shirt.” Charlie, who lives in Lochmaben, noticed a mole had started to change following a summer holiday in 2023. The 19-year-old had it removed, but he was then told he had nodular malignant melanoma – and by the start of 2024 it had spread to lymph nodes under his armpits and he was stage 3C. There is no known cure for the disease and last summer he was told it had spread to his liver and lungs and had reached stage four. His battle has attracted huge support across Dumfries and Galloway and beyond. A fundraising campaign has raised more than £60,000 towards the cost of clinical trials and to fund research into a cure. Events have included a race night at former club Queen of the South, a bake sale and a golf day. Click here for more news and sport from Dumfries and Galloway. And in February, Kilsyth Athletic donated the proceeds of their West of Scotland League third division clash with Threave to the cause. Charlie started his career with Queens and spent last season on loan at Dalbeattie Star, winning the South of Scotland League and a number of awards despite his diagnosis. He joined Threave in the summer and his story was featured by BBC Scotland ahead of the club’s Scottish Cup encounter with Stranraer.
