The Leigh Leopards have announced a major coup, securing hooker Edwin Ipape’s future with a historic six-year contract extension.
This groundbreaking deal will keep Ipape, a standout player in the Super League, with the Leopards until the end of the 2031 season.
Ipape’s impressive performances had attracted significant interest from both NRL and Super League clubs. However, Leigh successfully fought off this competition to retain their star player.
This monumental contract signifies a significant investment in the club’s future and sends a strong message about their ambitions.
In an exclusive interview with Love Rugby League, Leigh Leopards Head Coach Adrian Lam emphasized the importance of this signing, stating, “It’s a sign to everyone that you can’t just come here and pinch our players anymore.
” He added, “We’re a club that you want to stay at and remain at.” Lam acknowledged the intense competition for Ipape’s signature, particularly from Super League rivals and the Sydney Roosters in the NRL, as well as the potential lure of the future Papua New Guinea NRL franchise.
However, Ipape’s happiness at the club, combined with the support from the board and staff, proved decisive.
“He loves the place, with the crowd, and we’ve created some wild memories together as a group,” Lam explained.
“He doesn’t want to go anywhere.” He further highlighted the significance of Ipape’s journey, from the highlands of Papua New Guinea to a six-year contract in Super League, calling it “unbelievable news.”
The club’s announcement, made during their “The Greatest Show in Super League” event, has generated excitement among fans and throughout the rugby league community.
Lam told Love Rugby League he believes this signing will lift the entire club and town. “It’s great news for the club and great news for the town. Great news for the fans and everyone involved with rugby league,” he said.
He lauded Ipape’s consistent improvement and his importance to the team and the community, emphasizing the club’s commitment to building their future around players like him.
With Ipape’s future secured, Leigh’s attention now turns to other key players, including fellow Kumuls star Lachlan Lam, who has expressed interest in returning to Australia and the NRL.
